Spoilers for Richard Osman’s novel and the 2025 film adaptation. Bogdan killed Tony Curran in both versions, but the motive is different: the novel’s plot material links it to Tony’s role in the killing of Bogdan’s friend Kazimir, while the film presents Tony’s death as accidental self-defense after a dispute over his passport.
Who killed Tony Curran?
In both the novel and Netflix’s 2025 film adaptation, Tony’s killer is Bogdan. The important distinction is why Tony dies: the book and film do not give the same account. Netflix’s ending explainer describes the film version; the novel details below are supported by a Penguin Readers Level 6 answer key, not a direct citation to the complete unabridged novel.
Why did Bogdan kill Tony in the novel?
The Penguin Readers answer key connects Bogdan’s motive to Tony’s criminal operation. It says Tony had Bogdan’s friend Kazimir killed, and that Bogdan later confesses to Stephen. The answer key also says Tony had a cab driver killed because the driver witnessed the shooting of a boy. These details place Tony’s murder in the context of the violence surrounding his operation, rather than the film’s passport confrontation.
Why does Bogdan kill Tony in the film?
Netflix’s account gives a different motive and sequence. Tony demands his passport so he can travel to Poland to visit his sick mother. The confrontation ends with Bogdan killing Tony in what the film presents as accidental self-defense—not as a planned act of revenge for Kazimir.

How does the film’s wider ending connect to Tony’s murder?
The film ties its present-day murders to the old Angela Hughes case. Elizabeth realizes that Angela’s boyfriend, Peter Mercer, killed her; Penny later killed Peter and buried his body in the Coopers Chase cemetery. When Ian Ventham’s development plans put the remains at risk of discovery, John kills Ian with fentanyl to protect Penny’s secret. By the film’s close, John and Penny are dead, Joyce has been accepted as an official member of the club, and Coopers Chase has been sold to Joyce’s daughter Joanna. These linked revelations belong to the film’s version of the story and should not be assumed to describe the novel.

The comparison is necessarily uneven: the available publisher source for the novel’s Tony motive is a graded-reader answer key, while the broader linked ending details here come from accounts of the film. Richard Osman has described clue planting as a matter of including details that make the ending feel earned in retrospect; in a 2025 PBS Books interview, he also noted that humor can help hide clues among character tangents and comic dialogue.
