Spoilers for the ending and both credits scenes of Sinners. Sammie survives the night and leaves with his guitar; Smoke survives the vampire battle but dies after killing the Klan attackers. Stack and Mary return as vampires in the 1992 during-credits scene, while the final post-credits scene returns to a younger Sammie playing music.
What happens at the end of Sinners?
After Remmick’s vampire group attacks the juke joint and turns several people, the remaining living characters make a last stand. Sammie wounds Remmick with his guitar, and Smoke stakes him. The vampire horde is destroyed as sunrise comes, leaving Smoke and Sammie alive at the end of the fight (TIME).
Smoke sends Sammie home and stays behind. Sammie reaches his preacher father’s church bloodied and carrying his broken guitar. His father demands that he put it down; Sammie refuses and leaves with it. The moment echoes the film’s opening and signals that Sammie will continue playing, rather than surrendering his music.
Smoke then faces Hogwood and the Klan members attacking the club. He kills them, but is fatally wounded. He dies after seeing Annie and their baby, according to TheWrap. Smoke’s death happens after the vampire battle, not during his fight with Remmick.

Who lives, who dies, and who remains a vampire?
| Character | Fate |
|---|---|
| Sammie | Survives the night, keeps his guitar, and is shown as an older musician in 1992. |
| Smoke | Survives the vampire attack, kills the Klan attackers, then dies from his wounds. |
| Stack | Dies as a human during the night and later appears as a vampire. |
| Mary | Is turned into a vampire and later appears with Stack. |
Stack and Mary’s later appearance makes clear that Smoke’s decision to let Stack live does not return him to human life. They persist as vampires, a supernatural existence distinct from Smoke’s death. Several other characters are killed or turned during the attack; the film does not give every character the same fate.
What happens in the credits scenes?
During the credits: Sammie meets Stack and Mary in 1992
The during-credits epilogue jumps forward to 1992. Elderly Sammie has performed, and Stack and Mary reunite with him afterward. They are still vampires. The scene shows that Sammie’s music has endured across decades, while Stack and Mary have continued in their undead existence (The Guardian; TheWrap).

After the credits: young Sammie plays “This Little Light of Mine”
The final post-credits scene returns to a younger Sammie playing “This Little Light of Mine.” The song is associated with Christianity and twentieth-century civil-rights movements. The Guardian reads the moment as a possible reclamation of music that the film has framed as “the devil’s music”; that is an interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from the filmmakers.
Why does Remmick want Sammie?
Remmick offers the survivors a place in his vampire community, presenting it as an escape from the racism and restrictions imposed by the world around them. But his interest in Sammie is not simply companionship: TIME reports that Remmick wants to co-opt Sammie’s musical gift. The offer therefore carries a cost—belonging and continued supernatural life in exchange for autonomy and control over what makes Sammie’s music his own.

The Guardian interprets the vampire community as a form of assimilation or compromise. That reading helps explain the contrast between Remmick’s offer and Sammie’s choice to leave with his guitar, but the film does not establish one official, singular meaning for the ending.
What does the ending mean?
The ending gives its central characters different kinds of survival. Smoke dies protecting the space he helped create. Sammie carries his music forward in human life. Stack and Mary continue as vampires and return to Sammie decades later. One grounded reading is that the film contrasts a hard-won community and creative independence with a supernatural offer of belonging that comes at the cost of self-determination.

The juke joint can be read as a community space, while Remmick’s offer suggests that escape from racist limits may still demand compromise. The Guardian notes that the film’s multiple endings resist a single final interpretation. Coogler has described Sinners as “genre-fluid” and as a love letter to his uncle, who loved the blues, in a CBS News interview published April 16, 2025. That context underscores music’s importance without settling the ending’s meaning for the audience.

TheWrap points to a baby carriage in the scene involving Bert and Joan but says the film does not resolve what it means. It is not established that they had a child, that a child died, or that Remmick killed one. The Native American vampire hunters also do not return to the story, and their absence is not explained.
