Apple TV may have strategic reasons to keep investing in prestige shows such as Severance, but the reported loss of more than $1 billion a year is not a figure Apple has confirmed—and no public evidence shows that Severance alone caused it or that Apple has said the loss is worth it. The argument is better understood as a possible long-term investment in distinctive programming, audience engagement and Apple’s wider services business, not as a demonstrated financial return from one series.
What is behind the reported $1 billion loss?
On March 20, 2025, Reuters reported that The Information, citing two people familiar with the matter, said Apple TV+ was losing more than $1 billion annually. Reuters said Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The estimate was not an Apple-reported result, and Apple’s public filings do not break out Apple TV’s revenue, subscribers or profit.
The same reporting said Apple had spent more than $5 billion a year on content since the service launched and cut that spending by about $500 million in 2024. Content spending is not the same as total operating costs, and neither figure on its own establishes the service’s net loss. The reported loss estimate and the spending figure describe different things.
Apple’s Q3 fiscal 2026 Form 10-Q reports Services as a group rather than isolating Apple TV. In 2025, MacRumors, relaying The Information, noted that Apple had reported more than $96 billion in Services revenue in its then-most-recent fiscal year. That company-wide figure cannot be used as Apple TV revenue or as proof that the streaming service is profitable.

How many subscribers does Apple TV have?
Apple does not disclose a subscriber count in the sources reviewed. The two estimates reported in March 2025 are close in scale but come from different sources and should not be treated as a single verified count:

These figures offer a rough sense of scale, not a reliable basis for calculating revenue per subscriber or the cost of acquiring and keeping a customer. The public evidence cited here does not establish Apple TV’s average subscription revenue, churn, viewing by paying customers or full cost base.

Why would Apple keep investing in a service that may lose money?
There is a plausible strategic case, even though the available figures cannot prove it is Apple’s actual rationale. A streaming service can serve more than one purpose: it can sell subscriptions, give Apple a prominent entertainment brand, and add a reason for customers to remain engaged with Apple’s paid services. Apple TV’s distinctive, exclusive programming may also help the service stand out in a crowded market. Those are business interpretations, not disclosed explanations for the reported loss.
Programming can build a recognizable identity
Severance is the kind of high-profile series that can make a relatively small catalogue more visible: it offers critics and viewers a clear title to discuss, rather than asking them to choose a service based only on a large volume of content. Apple’s January 2026 newsroom release said the show led the 2025 Emmys as the most-awarded drama. That is evidence of industry recognition, not evidence that the show generated enough subscriptions or revenue to cover its cost.

A service can matter to a broader portfolio
Apple may value video as one part of its Services portfolio, alongside businesses that are reported together in its filings. A customer who uses several Apple services could make the overall relationship more valuable to the company than any one subscription viewed alone. But the filings available here do not disclose whether Apple TV increases retention or spending elsewhere, or by how much. Aggregate Services revenue cannot answer that question.
The investment horizon may be longer than a single show
Original programming can accumulate recognition, a returning audience and a library over time. That gives Apple a possible reason to accept near-term costs while it develops the service. It does not follow that every expensive production pays back, or that a popular or acclaimed title is necessarily profitable. The public reporting does not allocate Apple TV’s reported loss or content budget to Severance.

Do viewing and awards show that the strategy is working?
They show momentum and cultural reach, but they are not financial statements. Apple said total Apple TV viewing hours grew 36% year over year in December 2025, setting a monthly engagement record. The company named several contributors, including F1, Pluribus and The Family Plan 2; it did not attribute the increase to Severance alone or connect the growth to profit.
Apple’s January 2026 newsroom release also reported 672 award wins and 3,085 nominations to date. These are Apple’s own cumulative figures, and awards indicate recognition rather than subscription conversion, viewing scale or financial return. Each is a useful signal for the case that Apple TV is becoming a more visible entertainment brand, but neither settles whether the service earns more than it spends.

For another indication of scale, MacRumors, relaying The Information, reported that Apple TV accounted for less than 1% of total U.S. streaming viewing in February 2025. The same account cited Netflix at 8.2% and Amazon at 3.5%. Those shares are reported figures, not a current independently verified comparison in the source material available here; the account did not provide a primary Nielsen citation. They suggest Apple TV was a smaller viewing player at that time, not what its future value or profitability will be.
What the numbers do—and do not—let viewers conclude
- Established by company disclosure: Apple reports Services as a group; the cited filings do not separately show Apple TV’s financial performance.
- Reported, not confirmed by Apple: the annual loss estimate, the content-spending figures and the subscriber estimates.
- Signals of reach: awards and a reported increase in viewing hours, which do not by themselves establish a financial return.
- Not established: that Severance generated a specific number of subscribers, caused the reported loss, or made Apple TV profitable.
Apple’s public-facing newsroom used the name “Apple TV” in 2026, while the March 2025 financial reporting used “Apple TV+.” The naming change does not supply the missing standalone financial disclosures.
So, is Severance worth the reported loss?
There is no public calculation that can answer that question. The reported annual loss applies to the service, not to Severance by itself, and the public data do not show the series’ costs, subscriber impact or contribution to revenue. The stronger, narrower conclusion is that Apple appears to be building a premium entertainment service whose awards and audience engagement may support its broader strategy. Whether that investment pays off—and whether Apple considers the reported losses acceptable—remains undisclosed.
