It is the damage the secrecy does to Belly’s trust in the person she thought she knew best. The series leaves the couple’s breakup status disputed; the deeper breach is that Belly now wonders what else she may not know about him.
What happened in Cabo—and why the breakup label is disputed
Season 3 begins after a four-year time jump. Belly is in college and dating Jeremiah when she learns that he slept with another girl during a spring-break trip to Cabo. Jeremiah believed a brief argument had ended their relationship. Belly believed they were still together.
That disagreement matters. The show does not give an uncontested answer to whether the hookup technically counts as cheating, because the two characters understood their relationship status differently. But the dispute over the label does not settle the question of how Jeremiah handled what happened.
Did Jeremiah cheat on Belly?
It depends on whose understanding of the relationship you accept. Lola Tung, who plays Belly, said she did not think the couple was on a break or broken up, partly because the argument was so quick and events moved fast. She also acknowledged that Belly did not reach out. Those are Tung’s views on the characters, not a definitive ruling from the series.

Tung’s moral distinction is clearer than the show’s breakup status: “No matter whether you think that he cheated or not, it’s wrong,” she said of the rebound and the concealment. That separates two questions often collapsed into one: whether the couple was technically together, and whether keeping the hookup from Belly damaged their relationship. Her account supports the latter as a central wound.
Why the secrecy changes how Belly sees Jeremiah
Jeremiah has been part of Belly’s life since childhood and occupies the role of a familiar, dependable friend as well as a romantic partner. Learning what happened in Cabo unsettles that sense of familiarity. Tung describes Belly’s reaction as shock and heartbreak, followed by the question of what else she might not know about him.

That is why the conflict reaches beyond a single argument about infidelity. Belly is confronting a gap between the person she believed she knew and the person who withheld something consequential from her. The series gives grounds to read that as a trust rupture; it does not, on this evidence, establish that Jeremiah is generally manipulative or that he planned the concealment in advance.
Why Belly and Jeremiah reconnect
The couple’s later engagement does not erase the Cabo breach. Tung describes both characters as emotionally vulnerable: Belly has recently faced the possibility of losing her brother Steven and has already experienced Susannah’s death. She also says Jeremiah was trying to show up for Belly. That context helps explain why they reconnect without making the underlying trust question disappear.

The distinction is useful: a relationship can resume because two people need one another or still love one another, while unresolved doubts about honesty remain. The engagement is part of the story’s progression, not proof that the earlier conflict was harmless or fully repaired.
How the four-year time jump changes the context
The television adaptation gives Belly and Jeremiah a four-year gap, rather than the two-year gap in Jenny Han’s third novel. Han said the longer interval raises the stakes and creates more possibilities. It also places the characters in a different life-stage context, with Belly in college when the final season opens.

That adaptation choice helps explain why the series can give the relationship more room to develop before its final resolution. It does not, by itself, prove a different underlying character trait or settle how viewers should judge the Cabo argument.

Belly and Jeremiah become engaged, but the finale has Belly choose Conrad, as she does in the third novel. The series changes some details along the way, so the shared endpoint should not be treated as proof that every earlier decision by Jeremiah was wrong—or that the story offers a simple moral verdict.

For viewers sorting through the Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah debate, the more revealing question is not which character wins. It is whether the relationship can survive the loss of trust created when Belly learns that someone so familiar kept a consequential truth from her. Christopher Briney, who plays Conrad, has said that strong audience reactions mean actors are doing their jobs; that response is not evidence that Jeremiah is written as a villain. The show’s official social account has also urged fans to keep discussion kind.
