Spoilers for the Season 2 finale, “Cold Harbor.” Mark helps Gemma reach Lumon’s exit, but he does not go with her. He turns back for Helly because he understands that leaving may mean the end of his own existence. The choice is about love, but also about whether Mark’s innie gets to claim a life as his own.
What happens in “Cold Harbor”?
The finale makes the conflict between Mark’s innie and outie explicit. At the Lumon cabins, the two communicate through a camcorder. Outie Mark wants his innie to help rescue Gemma, his wife, whom he believed dead. Innie Mark is wary of being used to solve his outie’s problem and of losing his bond with Helly. Creator Dan Erickson has said that outie Mark’s mistake with Helly’s name is the moment innie Mark’s trust collapses.
Innie Mark completes the Cold Harbor file. During Lumon’s Department of Choreography and Merriment celebration, Helly distracts the workers while Mark heads downstairs. After a confrontation with Mr. Drummond and help from Lorne, he reaches Cold Harbor. There, Gemma’s Cold Harbor consciousness is dismantling a crib. When she leaves that room, her outie consciousness returns and reunites with outie Mark.
The pair ascend through Lumon, switching back to their innie states on the way: Mark becomes Mark S., and Gemma becomes Ms. Casey. Mark guides her to the exit. Ms. Casey crosses the threshold; Mark stays behind. He looks from Gemma to Helly, turns back toward Helly, and the two run through the red-lit halls as alarms sound.

Why does Mark choose Helly over Gemma?
It is not simply a contest between two women. Innie Mark’s decision is about whether his existence and attachments count, rather than treating himself as an extension of his outie. Erickson told TheWrap, “He’s choosing his life over this life that he’s always felt beholden to, which is his outie’s. That’s really the journey of the season.”
For most of the season, Mark’s mission is to find Gemma for his outie. By the finale, he recognizes that following her through the exit may mean he never exists again. His choice is therefore about survival and identity as well as love. Erickson describes it as both righteous and selfish: Mark loves Helly, and to him that love is as great as, or greater than, outie Mark’s love for Gemma.

Ben Stiller described the final image as the intended choice: “That image, to me, was always there in my head of Mark in the hallway, looking between Gemma and Helly.” The choice gives Mark agency, but it does not make the consequences easy or settle what happens next.
What does the Cold Harbor file reveal?
Erickson connects Mark’s Macrodata Refinement work to Gemma: each file Mark completed represented a different innie for her, and the numbers he sorted reflected her tempers. Cold Harbor is the final test shown. Gemma’s severed consciousness dismantles a crib without the emotional response her outie would have to it.

The scene demonstrates that Lumon can separate consciousnesses from memories and emotional associations, but it does not explain the full technology, why Lumon chose this test, or the project’s intended use. Erickson has described the emotional logic as Mark unknowingly sorting through aspects of the woman he mourns. His ability to recognize Gemma’s tempers reflects how deeply he knows her; it is not an explanation of a technical loophole in severance.
Did Gemma get out of Lumon?
Ms. Casey is the version of Gemma who crosses the exit threshold. Her consciousness changes as she leaves the Cold Harbor room and rides upward: her outie returns for the reunion with outie Mark, then she switches back to Ms. Casey before reaching the exit.

The episode does not establish how much Gemma understands about the procedure or whether she has escaped every threat Lumon poses. Actor Dichen Lachman interprets the innies’ trust in Mark as rooted in Gemma’s love for him, even though Ms. Casey does not consciously recognize him as her husband. At the exit, Gemma is left calling after Mark when he turns back.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the woman at the end Helly or Helena?
It is Helly R., not Helena. Britt Lower explicitly identified the woman as Helly. Lower connects Helly’s choice to run toward Mark with the bonds she has formed with the innies: after seeing her father, Jame Eagan, affirm Kier in her, Helly feels she may not belong with her outie’s family. Dylan’s return and the memory of Irving help renew her commitment to the innies. Like Mark, she chooses allegiance to her innie life.

What does the finale leave unresolved?
The ending does not say whether Mark and Helly can escape, whether they survive, what Gemma does outside, whether Lumon’s project can be exposed, or what becomes of Gemma’s other consciousnesses. Stiller described the final image as two people together inside a still-hellish situation. Erickson has not disclosed where Mark and Helly’s story goes, so any claim about their eventual fate remains speculation. Apple TV+ had announced Season 3 by March 21, 2025, but that renewal does not resolve the characters’ immediate situation.
