Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 7, “Chikhai Bardo.” Gemma is alive and being held by Lumon on its testing floor. The company appears to activate separate innie versions of her for isolated room experiments. She does not remember those experiences as a continuous sequence, though she says physical pain can remain. Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor seen earlier in the series, is one of Gemma’s innie identities—not the only one.
What is happening to Gemma at Lumon?
“Chikhai Bardo” reveals that the Gemma whom Mark was told had died is alive in Lumon’s custody. On the testing floor, she is moved between rooms where different versions of her innie appear to undergo separate experiences or tasks. Dr. Mauer oversees the process.
The episode shows a dental procedure, simulated flight turbulence and the writing of Christmas thank-you notes. These scenes suggest that Lumon can confine Gemma’s experiences to particular rooms and purposes. They do not provide a complete inventory of the rooms or explain exactly how the company produces multiple innies in one person.
What Gemma remembers—and what she does not
Gemma says she cannot recall the rooms as one continuous experience. That does not mean the experiences leave no trace: she reports that pain can persist afterward. The distinction matters. Her conscious memory is fragmented, but her body can still register what has happened.

How Ms. Casey is connected to Gemma
Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor on the severed floor, is one of Gemma’s innie identities. The testing-floor scenes place her within a larger system of room-specific versions, rather than presenting her as Gemma’s sole innie. Episode 7 does not spell out the mechanism that allows Lumon to create or switch among those identities.
What is Cold Harbor?
Cold Harbor is an unvisited room that Dr. Mauer discusses with Gemma. He tells her, “You will see the world again, and the world will see you.” The line makes the room sound like a major threshold in Lumon’s plans for her, but the episode does not show what happens inside it or explain its purpose. Treat any more specific account of Cold Harbor as a theory, not an answer established by this episode.

Why Mark and Gemma’s past matters
The episode cuts between Gemma’s captivity and memories of her life with Mark. They first meet at a blood drive at Ganz College, where both teach. Later, they face fertility struggles and a miscarriage. Mark is eventually told that Gemma died in a car accident; his grief helps explain why he chose severance.
The flashbacks also raise the possibility that Lumon’s interest in the couple began before Mark underwent severance. TIME points to Lumon branding at the blood drive and Dr. Mauer’s appearance at the fertility clinic after the miscarriage. Those details invite suspicion, but do not prove exactly when Lumon became involved, whom it targeted, or how much it knew.

What the episode establishes—and what remains a mystery
| Evidence level | What can be said |
|---|---|
| Shown or stated | Gemma is alive in Lumon’s custody; she experiences separate room-bound episodes; she does not remember them as a continuous sequence; and pain can remain afterward. Ms. Casey is one of her innie identities. |
| Suggested, not proven | Lumon may have taken an interest in Mark and Gemma before Mark’s severance. The blood-drive branding and Dr. Mauer’s presence at the fertility clinic are clues, not proof of the full timeline or a specific plan. |
| Unanswered in this episode | How Lumon creates multiple innies, the testing floor’s complete function, what Cold Harbor will do and Lumon’s full objective for Gemma. |
Creator Dan Erickson also cautioned against treating Gemma’s significance as a solved mystery. In a February 28, 2025 interview with GQ, he said, “We know there was something special about her,” and added, “We don’t still fully understand what that was.”
What “Chikhai Bardo” means
TIME describes Chikhai bardo as a Buddhist transitional stage associated with dying. In the episode, Gemma discusses a card showing a figure fighting himself, describing it as “the same guy fighting himself, defeating his own psyche. Ego death.” The image resonates with the series’ divided identities and characters crossing between different states of self. That is a thematic reading, not confirmation that the term names Lumon’s technical plan.
