Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 5 of Severance. “Funeral for a Friend” is a fitting frame for an episode about grief, distrust, and the people Lumon keeps out of sight. The official title is “The Grim Barbarity Of Optics and Design.” Irving and Dylan confront O&D’s Burt, while Mark and Helly leave their familiar office routes and find a room that raises more questions than it answers.
Episode details
- Series: Severance, Season 1, Episode 5
- Official title: “The Grim Barbarity Of Optics and Design”
- Release date: March 11, 2022
- Runtime: 43 minutes
Apple’s episode listing and press archive identify the episode and establish its central turns: Irving and Dylan confront Burt, and the team ventures into the hallways. Mark and Helly’s search leads them to a strange department.
Helly returns, and Mark asks for help
After surviving her hanging attempt in the previous episode, Helly returns to Lumon. Mark later shows her a map he has pieced together from Petey’s drawings and asks her to help investigate. She refuses. The map gives Mark a reason to look beyond the routine of Macrodata Refinement, but he cannot make Helly share his willingness to take that risk. These scene-level events are detailed in Metawitches’ episode recap.
Why Burt and O&D become a flashpoint
Irving’s interest in Burt
Irving’s connection with Burt, an employee in Optics and Design (O&D), draws him across the department boundary. Dylan is wary of that connection, and the encounter turns into a confrontation. The tension matters because the severed workers have little reliable information about one another’s departments: suspicion can flourish in the gaps Lumon leaves between them.

The painting and the rumors
O&D’s disturbing painting appears to depict violence between workers from different departments. Stories about past conflict deepen the distrust between O&D and Macrodata Refinement, but the episode presents these accounts as claims and suspicions, not verified history. The painting makes the rumors feel tangible without proving that the alleged violence happened as described.
Mark and Helly find the goat room
Mark and Helly’s hallway excursion brings them to a room where a worker is tending baby goats. The discovery is startling precisely because the episode does not explain what the animals are for. It adds another unexplained operation to a workplace that already controls what its employees know about their own lives.

The goats have remained a source of fan speculation rather than a solved plot point in the sources available here. The official companion podcast revisited the episode with guest Jen Tullock, who plays Devon, and discussed Devon and Ricken’s relationship, birthing retreats, and theories about the goats. The Apple Podcasts listing dates that discussion January 10, 2025.
What the episode leaves open
- The goats’ purpose: The episode reveals their presence, not why Lumon has them.
- The departmental conflict: Rumors and the painting create a frightening picture, but do not establish the truth of the stories.
- Lumon’s larger plan: The discoveries widen the mystery; they do not yet explain how the hidden departments or the goats fit into it.
That uncertainty is the episode’s engine. Mark and Helly see enough to know their office is only part of Lumon, while Irving and Dylan’s clash shows how quickly the company’s information barriers can turn curiosity into suspicion.
