Colin Jost played Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a sketch that also satirized lethal strikes on alleged drug boats near Venezuela and allegations of war crimes.
What happens in the sketch?
The cold open unfolds as a mock press conference. Jost’s Hegseth fields questions about the boat strikes and allegations surrounding a second strike, while Johnson’s Trump appears to doze at the podium. Trump dreams aloud about Zohran Mamdani and rent freezes, then denies sleeping and jokes that he does not know where he is, who he is, or what year it is.
Trump also makes a “fog of war” joke while backing Hegseth, then says he would abandon him if doing so could hurt him politically. The sketch’s final beat returns to the question of affordability: the reporter asks, “More Americans, including your own voters, now blame you for the affordability crisis. What’s your message to them?” Trump does not answer; he is asleep again, and Hegseth tells the room to hush and jokes about getting Trump another MRI. TV Insider’s account of the sketch reproduces the reporter’s line.
Why does the cold open bring up boat strikes and war crimes?
The sketch’s Hegseth material draws on contemporaneous reporting and congressional debate about lethal U.S. strikes near Venezuela. In a December 2, 2025 House debate, a member described an allegation that an order had been given to kill survivors of an earlier attack and argued that killing defenseless people would constitute a war crime. A Republican member responding said, “I don’t know whether that happened or not,” and said the House and Senate Armed Services Committees were examining the allegations. The debate is not a finding that the alleged order or war crime occurred. The Congressional Record passage reflects both the allegation and the stated investigative status.

How does affordability connect to the real-world news?
The sketch’s closing line is scripted satire, not a poll result established by the cited material. Its premise should not be read as independent evidence that a specific number of Americans—or even a measured majority—blamed Trump for affordability concerns.
The subject was in the news that week. CBS reported that, at a December 2 Cabinet meeting, Trump called “affordability” a Democratic “con job,” while Hegseth touted lethal boat strikes near Venezuela. That juxtaposition helps explain why the sketch paired the affordability question with the boat-strike controversy; it does not turn the sketch’s dialogue into a factual survey finding. CBS’s December 2 report describes the remarks and meeting.

What the satire does—and does not—establish
- Established by the sketch’s coverage: SNL aired the cold open on December 6, 2025, with Jost as Hegseth and Johnson as Trump; the affordability question prompts the closing sleeping gag.
- Satirical portrayal: Trump’s dozing, confused jokes, and apparent indifference are character beats, not evidence about his health or conduct outside the performance.
- Underlying allegation: The cited House debate records claims about a second strike and an ongoing examination by committees. It does not establish a final factual or legal determination.
- Affordability premise: “More Americans” is the reporter character’s setup in the sketch, not a sourced statistic in the coverage cited here.
