MGM+’s Robin Hood is a ten-episode romantic adventure that starts before its hero becomes the outlaw of legend. It follows Rob from childhood into rebellion, placing his story in the conflict between Saxons and Normans and giving Marian a role in the struggle for power at court. That broad design gives the series room to explore more than familiar archery and outlawry; it also makes the success of its romance, political drama and long-form origin story the real test of whether it gets Robin Hood right.
What is MGM+’s Robin Hood about?
The series builds its story around a divide between Saxons and Normans. Rob is the son of a Saxon forester; Marian is the daughter of a Norman lord. Their relationship connects a romance across social and political boundaries with Rob’s growing resistance to injustice.

Rather than begin with an established outlaw, the show goes back to Robin’s beginnings. Creator Jonathan English told the Associated Press, “We actually show the beginning of Robin Hood,” adding, “We start the story with him as a child.” That choice lets the drama frame rebellion as something formed over time, not simply a legend that begins when Robin takes to the forest.
The platform synopsis describes Marian as working inside the court to thwart royal corruption while Rob leads a band of outlaws. That gives the familiar story two arenas: resistance outside the halls of power and political maneuvering within them. The series’ stated concerns include class and the unequal power wielded by the wealthy, though whether those ideas become persuasive drama depends on how the episodes develop them.

Does the series earn its sprawling scope?
Ten episodes give the show space to cover childhood, the growth of rebellion, the Norman-Saxon conflict and a central romance. Scope alone is not a virtue: an origin story can deepen a familiar hero, but it can also delay the outlaw adventure viewers came for. The key question is whether Rob’s path to rebellion and Marian’s choices at court feel like parts of one unfolding story rather than parallel obligations.
English has described the series as a story about class and what he calls the “absolute tyranny of class.” That is a useful lens for the show’s premise, not proof that its politics are nuanced or that every character escapes familiar archetypes. Its treatment of the divide between the two communities matters most when it gives the conflict human stakes beyond a simple opposition between good Saxons and bad Normans.

Robin and Marian: romance and political agency
Marian is positioned as more than a romantic counterpart: her access to court gives her a distinct way to resist corruption. That makes the relationship’s balance important. If both characters shape events in their own right, the romance can unite the political and personal strands; if Marian’s court role serves only to support Rob’s rise, the series’ broader promise is less convincing.
Jack Patten, who plays Rob, called the relationship “sort of Shakespearean” in a TV Insider interview, describing two people who “on paper shouldn’t be together.” That is the actor’s reading of the romance, not a critical verdict. Whether it lands depends on the chemistry and development the episodes put on screen.

Cast and production: what is established
Jack Patten plays Rob, Lauren McQueen plays Marian, and Sean Bean plays the Sheriff of Nottingham. The listed ensemble also includes Lydia Peckham as Priscilla of Nottingham, Steven Waddington as the Earl of Huntingdon and Connie Nielsen as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine; the Prime Video catalogue listing additionally names Tom Mison and Anastasia Griffith.
The production filmed in Serbia. An Associated Press set report described candlelit castle interiors, stained-glass lancet windows, researched set dressing and costumes intended to evoke 12th-century England. Those details support a discussion of the show’s visual world-building, but they do not establish historical accuracy. The series’ period atmosphere is a production choice, not a substitute for checking its history against scholarship.

Where to watch Robin Hood and what is its release status?
The first season has concluded. MGM+ announced a ten-episode second season on February 24, 2026, with production planned in Serbia for summer 2026. The announcement did not provide a season-two premiere date.
Availability depends on market and account. About Amazon UK identifies Prime Video with an MGM+ add-on as a UK viewing route; its page describes the UK premiere on November 2, 2025, with two episodes at launch and weekly episodes through the December 28 finale. The Prime Video catalogue listing also displayed “This video is currently unavailable” when accessed. Check the listing available in your country and the current subscription terms rather than assuming the UK route applies everywhere.

Verdict: does Robin Hood get everything right?
“Gets everything right” is too sweeping a claim to accept on premise alone. The series has a clear, expansive approach: it begins in childhood, links Robin’s rebellion to the Norman-Saxon divide and gives Marian a place in court politics as well as in the romance. Its ten-episode structure and researched production design support that ambition. But the available production and platform information cannot establish whether the pacing holds, the romance convinces, the conflict gains complexity or the performances lift familiar characters beyond archetype. The strongest case for the series is not that every choice is automatically right, but that it attempts a fuller origin story than the outlaw legend alone requires.
