Mid-Century Modern is a warm, joke-forward ensemble sitcom built in the tradition of classic multi-camera comedy, but its chosen family of gay friends and its risqué humor give the familiar setup a contemporary edge. The cast is the main draw; the series is a better fit for viewers who enjoy broad, old-school sitcom rhythms than for anyone expecting a serious showcase of Palm Springs design.

What is Mid-Century Modern about?

After an unexpected death, three longtime gay friends decide to spend their later years together in Palm Springs. They share a home with Bunny Schneiderman, the wealthiest of the three, and Bunny’s mother, Sybil. Hulu’s official synopsis presents them as a chosen family, with a joke about the sort of blunt advice a close friend might give: “As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.” That is Hulu’s promotional description, not a line attributed to a character.

The setup gives the show a comfortable domestic center: friends navigating later life, family ties and one another’s company. The title evokes Palm Springs and its modernist associations, but the series is not established as a design-history guide or a dedicated showcase of architecture.

Who stars in the series?

Actor Role
Nathan Lane Bunny Schneiderman
Matt Bomer Jerry Frank
Nathan Lee Graham Arthur Broussard
Linda Lavin Sybil, Bunny’s mother

The comedy depends on the group’s chemistry and timing as much as on the premise. Lane, Bomer and Graham play the friends at the center, while Lavin brings Bunny’s mother into the household dynamic.

How does the show balance throwback sitcom form and edge?

Mid-Century Modern leans into the recognizable pleasures of a classic multi-camera sitcom: a close-knit ensemble, a domestic setting and a brisk, joke-led rhythm. That familiar structure is paired with contemporary queer characters and more risqué humor. The contrast is part of the show’s identity; the result feels deliberately old-fashioned in form without treating its characters as a period piece.

TheWrap has framed the series as honoring The Golden Girls while giving the chosen-family template a gay spin. That is a useful comparison for its ensemble setup, not a claim that Mid-Century Modern is a remake or direct adaptation. Its own household—a group of gay friends and one friend’s mother in Palm Springs—sets it apart.

Was Mid-Century Modern canceled?

Yes. Hulu canceled the series after its first season. Metacritic’s cancellation scorecard and a report by TheWrap both date the news to September 29, 2025. The available reporting does not establish why Hulu made the decision, so it should not be attributed to ratings, cost or audience size.

Is Mid-Century Modern on Hulu?

Hulu is the documented viewing service. Its current listing identifies one season with ten episodes and a TV-MA rating. Availability can vary by region and change over time.

All ten episodes premiered on March 28, 2025. The series was executive-produced by Max Mutchnick, David Kohan and Ryan Murphy, with Lane and Bomer also serving as executive producers. James Burrows executive-produced and directed; 20th Television is the studio.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

The show is aimed at viewers who want an ensemble comedy with an affectionate domestic premise, classic multi-camera pacing and humor that can be pointed or risqué. Its strongest case is the cast’s comic interplay and the way it brings queer friends to a familiar sitcom framework. Viewers looking for a sustained architectural or design-history exploration should not take the title as a promise of one.
