Memory of a Killer has a strong central hook: a paid killer must keep his work and family life apart while early-onset Alzheimer’s threatens his ability to do either. Patrick Dempsey anchors the premise as Angelo, but whether the series turns that setup into a compelling thriller is a more open question. Early reviews split over the first two episodes, with one finding brisk entertainment and the other disjointed execution.

What is Memory of a Killer about?

Angelo Doyle is a suburban salesman and family man with another, far more dangerous occupation: he works as a hitman. He is also living with an early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The two sides of his life are already difficult to keep separate; memory lapses make the deception more precarious.

In its review of the opening episodes, TheWrap describes Angelo’s pregnant daughter Maria as apparently being targeted, while an FBI agent grows suspicious. The episodes use small memory failures—including a forgotten passcode and a gun left in a refrigerator—as reminders that Angelo’s condition can intrude on his criminal work. These are details reported from the opening episodes, not a summary of the full season.

Is Patrick Dempsey good as a hitman?

Dempsey is the series’ main point of interest: Angelo has to move between the reassuring surface of a family man and the violence required by his work. TheWrap singled out that shift as part of the early episodes’ appeal, describing a transition from loving father to brutal killer. That contrast gives Dempsey material beyond simply playing a competent assassin.

Calling the performance a “masterclass,” however, would overstate what the available early assessments establish. The first two episodes drew sharply different reactions, and neither review amounts to a consensus on the complete season. The more useful question is whether the show makes Angelo’s two lives—and the cost of keeping them apart—feel credible and tense.

Do the thriller and memory-loss story work?

For TheWrap, the opening episodes move briskly through plot turns and action. The review found the dark antihero premise entertaining, while also worrying that the series has too many threads and leaves Angelo stretched thin. That is a real tension in the setup: the family danger, FBI attention, criminal work and cognitive decline all compete for the same limited screen time.

Variety was considerably less persuaded by those episodes, calling them disjointed and bland. It questioned the plausibility of Angelo’s double life and the way the show handles cognitive decline, and found the crime plotting generic. The review did identify an elevator fight and Gina Torres’s FBI agent as welcome elements.

The disagreement points to the series’ central execution challenge. Memory loss can make a thriller more suspenseful when it changes what Angelo can reliably know or do; it can also feel like a convenient device if lapses appear only when the plot needs them. The early reviews do not resolve that question in the show’s favor for every viewer: TheWrap responds to the momentum and premise, while Variety finds the plotting and characterization less coherent.

Who is in the cast?

Patrick Dempsey plays Angelo. The supporting cast includes Michael Imperioli as Dutch, Richard Harmon as Joe, Odeya Rush as Maria, Daniel David Stewart as Jeff, Peter Gadiot as Dave, and Gina Torres as Special Agent Linda Grant, according to FOX’s series announcement. Torres’s FBI agent is one of the elements Variety found effective in the opening episodes.

Dutch is positioned as someone Angelo must trust in a dangerous business, though FOX’s cast announcement also warns that dependability is not one of Dutch’s strengths. That description is network promotional copy, not a line of dialogue or an independent critical judgment.

Is Memory of a Killer based on a book?

Yes, by way of its adaptation lineage. FOX describes the series as inspired by the 2003 Belgian film De Zaak Alzheimer, and TheWrap reports that the film was adapted from a novel. The exact title and edition of the source novel are not established by those sources, so it is not possible to point confidently to a particular book edition or call one a series tie-in.

Where can you watch Memory of a Killer?

At launch, TheWrap reported that the series premiered on FOX on Sunday, January 25, 2026, moved to its regular Monday slot the following day, and had episodes available on Hulu the next day. That is launch-era information, not confirmation of current availability. Streaming catalogs, territory coverage and subscription requirements can change, so check FOX and Hulu listings in your location before relying on those details.
