Netflix’s Pulse has the ingredients of a familiar hospital soap: emergency cases, tangled workplace relationships and a doctor abruptly promoted into leadership. Willa Fitzgerald gives the series a capable center as Danny Simms, but the first season’s Miami setting and hurricane-fueled crisis do not, in the view of several reviewers, give that formula enough personality to feel fresh. The result is an easy comparison to Grey’s Anatomy—and a difficult one for Pulse to escape.
What is Pulse about?
Netflix’s first English-language medical procedural is set at Miami’s Maguire Medical Center. Willa Fitzgerald plays Danielle “Danny” Simms, a third-year emergency-medicine resident who is unexpectedly made chief resident. Colin Woodell plays Dr. Xander Phillips, Danny’s supervisor and former romantic partner. Their relationship and its fallout are part of the hospital’s professional drama, rather than a story separate from the medical emergencies.

The opening situation adds a hurricane approaching Miami while Xander is suspended pending an investigation and Danny takes on her temporary promotion. That combination—an external disaster, workplace pressure and private complications—signals the show’s intended mix of medical procedural and serialized soap.
The first season premiered on Netflix on April 3, 2025, and has ten episodes, according to Netflix Tudum’s premiere preview. Netflix’s Media Center listing identifies Zoe Robyn as creator and Carlton Cuse as co-showrunner and executive producer.

Why does Pulse invite a Grey’s Anatomy comparison?
The comparison is about its recognizable construction, not evidence that the series copied another show. TVLine’s April 3, 2025 review said the influence of Grey’s Anatomy is apparent quickly, pointing to the way Danny and Xander’s romance complicates their jobs. Both shows work in a well-established lane: hospital emergencies provide immediate stakes, while doctors’ relationships and professional conflicts carry across episodes.
That template can still work when a series gives its characters a distinctive voice, its setting a strong identity, or its cases enough texture to make the hospital feel like more than a backdrop. Pulse has a potentially useful point of difference in Miami and the hurricane, but the critical question is whether those elements change the show’s character or simply add another crisis around familiar relationship drama.

Does Willa Fitzgerald give the series a distinctive lead?
Danny is positioned to anchor the series: she is suddenly given authority while managing the consequences of a relationship with the doctor who supervised her. That role offers a built-in tension between competence, ambition and personal vulnerability. Fitzgerald is the reason to watch for viewers curious about how the show handles that pressure, but a lead performance alone cannot make a procedural feel distinctive if the surrounding writing and dynamics remain familiar.
The available reviews do not establish a broad consensus about Fitzgerald’s performance, so it would be misleading to treat one assessment as universal. The more defensible criticism is aimed at the show’s overall execution. TIME’s April 3 review called it short on personality, while The Standard’s April 4 review said it lacked a spark. Those are the publications’ judgments; they support a case that the series struggles to develop a memorable identity, not a claim that every viewer or critic will react the same way.

Does the Miami hurricane make the hospital drama feel new?
The hurricane gives the premiere a clear, immediate pressure point and connects the setting to a specific kind of emergency. It also risks functioning mainly as a dramatic accelerator: a storm can raise the stakes, but it cannot by itself distinguish the show’s characters or deepen its medical storytelling. The Standard’s review noted the romance unfolding amid a Miami hurricane and still found the series lacking a spark.
Netflix Tudum quotes creator and co-showrunner Zoe Robyn describing the fictional hospital this way: “You don’t really want to be in the hospital. But if you were in the hospital — this is the one you would want to be in.” That is promotional commentary about the imagined Maguire Medical Center, not medical advice or an independent judgment of the show’s realism.

Is Pulse worth watching?
It depends on what you want from a medical drama. If the appeal is a familiar ensemble-soap setup, a central romance complicated by work, and a high-stakes opening, Pulse offers those ingredients in a compact ten-episode season. If you want an unusually distinctive take on hospital life or a series whose setting and cases clearly set it apart, the critical response suggests tempering expectations.
There is also a straightforward limit to the commitment: Netflix canceled Pulse after its first season, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s July 3, 2025 report. The report says the show appeared in Netflix’s worldwide Top 10 rankings for four weeks. That is the duration of a ranking, not a viewership total, and the report does not establish that it caused the cancellation.
