Why was the show cancelled?
Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, offered this explanation in a statement reported by CinemaBlend: “We feel like it ran its course.” CinemaBlend’s report says Katz shared the response with Deadline. The cited reporting does not establish ratings, budget or audience figures as the reason, so those should not be treated as confirmed causes.
How did Season 5 end?
The 10-episode fifth season concluded with Stabler pursuing Julian Emery, who had murdered Stabler’s younger brother, Joe Jr. Stabler considers killing Emery, but he and Bell ultimately arrest him. Evidence Joe Jr. had gathered later emerges and undermines a deal Emery made with the Department of Justice, according to TVLine’s finale recap. These are the reported events of the series finale, not a setup for a confirmed sixth season.
