Just In Time makes its strongest case as a live, high-energy celebration of Bobby Darin’s songs, with Jonathan Groff at its center. The biographical story is a less compelling draw: in a 2025 review, Tim Teeman praised the show’s musical performance while questioning whether it offered a revelatory portrait of Darin.
Is Just In Time worth seeing?
If you want to hear Darin’s best-known songs delivered in a musical-theatre setting, the show’s appeal is clear. The Tony Awards describes it as an intimate, swinging nightclub experience with a live band, built around songs such as “Beyond the Sea,” “Mack the Knife,” “Splish Splash” and “Dream Lover.”

The more qualified answer is that the production appears stronger as a song showcase than as a deep biographical study. In his April 27, 2025 review for The Daily Beast, Tim Teeman wrote that the show “showcases all of those songs brilliantly” and is “full of pizazzy performance,” but concluded: “It’s a lovely concert, but not a revelatory show about the life of Bobby Darin.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of critical consensus.
Is Jonathan Groff good as Bobby Darin?
Groff’s performance is the production’s defining attraction in the reviews cited here. Broadway.com reproduces New York Times critic Jesse Green’s description of him as “sensational,” praising a performance that is “Thrilling sonically and emotionally.” The excerpt supports the sense of a commanding musical and emotional lead, though it cannot stand in for the full review.

That distinction matters for a documentary-minded viewer: a magnetic central performance can make a biography vivid without making its account of a life especially searching. Teeman’s review draws precisely that line between the pleasure of the performance and the depth of the portrait.
What songs are in Just In Time?
The official show description names four of Darin’s songs: “Beyond the Sea,” “Mack the Knife,” “Splish Splash” and “Dream Lover.” The production uses a live band and a nightclub frame, so its musical identity is central rather than incidental. The title list here is not a complete song-by-song running order.

What kind of production is it?
Just In Time is a Broadway musical, not a documentary or straight play. The Broadway League credits Warren Leight and Isaac Oliver with the book, based on an original concept by Ted Chapin and Jonathan Groff; Alex Timbers directed and Shannon Lewis choreographed. The production plays Circle in the Square Theatre.
Opening-date listings use different conventions: the Tony Awards page calls April 23, 2025 “opening night,” while the Broadway League lists April 26, 2025 as the public opening date and March 31 as the start of previews. These dates should not be treated as interchangeable.

Who is playing Bobby Darin now?
Groff’s run as Darin ended March 29, 2026. As of the current Broadway listings, Jeremy Jordan is named in the role. That means reviews and praise of Groff describe the earlier cast, not the performance a ticket buyer will see now. Check the Broadway League’s official show listing or Broadway.com’s performance listing for current cast and ticket details.
