Immaculate is a stylish, grisly religious horror film built around Sydney Sweeney’s forceful performance as an American nun at a remote Italian convent. Its convent-gothic imagery and bursts of body horror make it an effective shock ride, even as its ideas about faith, power, and bodily autonomy receive less development than its atmosphere does. “Nunsense” fits the film’s streak of audacious excess; it should not be mistaken for a straight comedy.
What is Immaculate about?
Directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, the 2024 film follows Cecilia, an American nun who travels to a quiet convent in Italy. NEON’s official synopsis keeps the secret at the center of the story deliberately vague: her new home harbors “unspeakable horrors.” The Associated Press adds that Cecilia’s religious life began after a near-death experience and that she travels abroad after her parish closes.

The setup puts devotional imagery and institutional authority in close quarters with a young woman whose choices are increasingly constrained. The film’s central tension comes less from a puzzle to solve than from watching Cecilia try to understand what is happening to her—and what the people around her are willing to do.
Is Immaculate worth watching?
Sydney Sweeney anchors the film
Sweeney gives Cecilia a clear emotional trajectory, moving from restrained devotion toward fear and resistance. AP critic Lindsey Bahr praises the performance’s range, including its shift from meekness to a “primal scream.” That physical commitment gives the film a human center even when the script leaves Cecilia’s inner life comparatively thin.

Simona Tabasco, Álvaro Morte, and Benedetta Porcaroli round out the credited starring cast. The convent setting helps turn their relationships into part of the unease: ordinary gestures and religious ritual can feel reassuring one moment and ominous the next.
Atmosphere and gore do more work than the script
The strongest case for the movie is visual. Costumes, makeup, and convent imagery give it a composed, brooding look before the violence becomes more explicit. TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek reads the religious iconography and stylized gore through the lens of 1970s Italian giallo, praising the film’s look and score. That is a critical interpretation, not a confirmed statement of the filmmakers’ intent.
The trade-off is that the film’s thematic ambitions are more suggestive than fully developed. Bahr argues that the script gives Cecilia limited characterization and does not settle on what it wants to say; in particular, she finds bodily autonomy underserved. The film raises questions about faith and institutional control, but atmosphere and shock often take precedence over exploring them.

The finale commits to excess
Without giving away its turns, the ending pushes the film’s body horror into deliberately extreme territory. Zacharek describes the effect as a shock that can provoke both a wince and laughter. That uneasy response captures the movie’s tonal gamble: some viewers will find the audacity cathartic, while others may feel the escalation is absurd or not earned by the character work that comes before it.

It is graphic and unsettling, but it is not built solely around sustained suspense or conventional jump scares. The horror comes from the contrast between a controlled religious environment and increasingly disturbing bodily violence. Rotten Tomatoes’ audience summary notes that some viewers may not find it scary enough, despite the concept and Sweeney’s lead performance working for many. Its intensity is therefore a better guide than a promise that it will frighten everyone in the same way.
The film is rated R for nudity, grisly images, some language, and strong violent content, according to Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it a poor fit for viewers seeking mild supernatural suspense or horror without explicit imagery.

How critics and audiences have responded
Reception is mixed rather than unanimous. Rotten Tomatoes showed a 71% Tomatometer from 213 reviews and a 58% Popcornmeter from 500+ verified ratings when accessed October 4, 2026. The critics’ consensus praises Sweeney’s performance while qualifying the execution; the audience summary likewise recognizes the premise and lead while noting that some viewers may find the scares or ending disappointing. These scores and counts can change over time.
AP’s Lindsey Bahr awarded the film two stars out of four, praising Sweeney and the craft while criticizing the script’s uncertainty and limited characterization. TIME’s Stephanie Zacharek is more taken with its brooding visual design and brazen ending. Their differing emphases point to the main viewing question: whether the film’s style and extremity compensate for its underdeveloped ideas.
