Pee-wee as Himself is worth watching for fans of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, but not because it is simply a behind-the-scenes celebration. This two-part documentary follows Paul Reubens’s rise while examining the divide between the performer and the character—and the struggle over who gets to tell Reubens’s story.
Is Pee-wee as Himself worth watching?
Yes, especially if you know Reubens through the bow-tied, high-voiced Pee-wee Herman. The documentary makes that familiar persona a starting point for a more complicated portrait: an artist shaped by performance and comedy, and a private person whose identity could not be reduced to his best-known creation. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times calls the film “rich and respectful,” while stressing that it is also “selective — edited and ordered, shaped to an end.” That tension is part of what makes it compelling.
The film’s most revealing subject is not just how Pee-wee came to be, but how a performer who carefully shaped a public persona responded to someone else shaping his life story. The result is rewarding and often joyful, but it is not a neutral transcript of Reubens’s life or a complete account of everything he might have said.
What is the documentary about?
Pee-wee as Himself is a two-part HBO Original documentary built around extensive interviews with Reubens. Warner Bros. Discovery describes its scope as including his influences and origins, his circus and avant-garde performance background, career decisions, personal life, and the distinction between Pee-wee and the person behind him. It premiered on HBO/Max on May 23, 2025; that original debut date does not establish whether it is currently available on Max in a particular country.

For Playhouse fans, the series is part of a broader story about the character’s rise and the way the public image came to stand for its creator. The emphasis is on Reubens’s life and self-understanding, rather than simply a retrospective of favorite episodes.
Is it about Pee-wee Herman or Paul Reubens?
Both, and the friction between those identities is the film’s central question. Pee-wee was Reubens’s creation and public persona, but the documentary asks what that character concealed, expressed, or came to demand of him. First-person testimony gives Reubens unusual room to discuss the distinction, while the finished film’s structure reflects a director’s decisions about what to include and how to order it.

That authorship question matters because Reubens wanted a say in the account, yet director Matt Wolf had to make an independent documentary. In a 2025 Television Academy interview, Wolf said Reubens took part in 40 hours of interviews after the two had spoken for hundreds of hours before Reubens agreed to the project. Wolf also described disagreements over control. Reubens put the problem bluntly in a line quoted at the start of that interview: “It turns out you’re not really supposed to control your own documentary.”
What does the documentary reveal about Pee-wee’s Playhouse?
It places the show and the character within Reubens’s larger creative path, rather than treating Pee-wee’s Playhouse as an isolated pop-culture artifact. The documentary’s value for fans lies in seeing how the persona and the career developed, and in considering how closely the public’s affection for Pee-wee could become bound up with expectations of the person who played him. It is not presented as a comprehensive episode-by-episode history of the series.

Fans looking for that kind of companion material can turn to different formats: the official Pee-wee site documented Blu-ray and DVD editions of the complete series, while publisher ECW Press lists Caseen Gaines’s Inside Pee-wee’s Playhouse, a print history with an episode guide, biographies, anecdotes, and photographs. Neither is an edition of the documentary.
How does Reubens’s death shape the film?
Reubens died in July 2023 at age 70. Wolf told the Television Academy that Reubens had not told him he was battling cancer, and that a final interview they had planned never took place before his death. Those details give the film an unavoidable sense of incompletion: its extensive interviews offer substantial first-person testimony, but they cannot include the last conversation Wolf expected to have with him.

Wolf has also described documentary-making as collaborative: “People don’t realize how collaborative the process of making a documentary is.” Here, collaboration did not mean that Reubens controlled the finished film. The gap between his participation and Wolf’s editorial independence is central to how the documentary should be watched.
