Rhaenyra’s plan to make Seasmoke a weapon for her cause ends in death, while the dragon’s next move points toward Addam of Hull. Across the water, food sent into King’s Landing turns the blockade into a crisis of public legitimacy; at court, Aemond tightens his grip on power. The episode’s title names the force pressing on both sides of the war: the people who must live with its consequences.
What happens in “Smallfolk”?
“Smallfolk” is Season 2, Episode 6 of House of the Dragon. It first aired July 21, 2024, runs 67 minutes, was written by Eileen Shim and directed by Andrij Parekh. The episode follows three connected pressures: Aemond’s consolidation of power, the hunger and anger spreading through King’s Landing, and Rhaenyra’s attempt to recruit another dragonrider.
Aemond pushes Alicent out of power
Acting as prince regent, Aemond orders Criston Cole to march toward Harrenhal. He removes Alicent from the Small Council and turns down Larys Strong’s implied bid to become Hand, directing him instead to summon Otto Hightower back. These decisions make Alicent’s loss of influence explicit and leave Aemond increasingly in command of the Green court.
Larys visits the badly injured Aegon and warns him that he remains at risk while Aemond rules. He counsels Aegon to make use of the fact that others may underestimate him. That is Larys’s political advice to a vulnerable king, not a general statement about disability.

Hunger turns the blockade into a legitimacy crisis
Mysaria’s agents spread the claim that the royals feast while ordinary people starve. When Larys reports unrest, Aemond is surprised that the people blame the Crown rather than Rhaenyra’s blockade. Mysaria then arranges for boats bearing Rhaenyra’s banners to carry food into King’s Landing.
The arrival wins Rhaenyra public praise, but the food is scarce and the crowd fights over it. Alicent and Helaena encounter the angry people after leaving the sept. A man grabs Alicent; a Kingsguard cuts off his arm, and Alicent orders her guards to sheath their swords. The royal party escapes amid a riot and chants for Rhaenyra. The scene shows why control of the city cannot rest on force alone: the Crown’s authority is being judged against people’s immediate hardship.
Rhaenyra’s Seasmoke plan goes disastrously wrong
Looking for another rider, Rhaenyra asks Ser Steffon Darklyn, who has distant Targaryen ancestry, to try to claim Seasmoke. Steffon accepts despite the danger. At first the dragon seems receptive, but then attacks, killing Steffon and a dragonkeeper. Before the attempt, Steffon puts the risk in stark terms: “I am but a man. The dragons are gods.”

The episode’s “How Not to Train Your Dragon” hook is darkly comic, but this is not a story about a dragon being trained or controlled by ordinary means. Rhaenyra is trying to recruit a rider for a military purpose; Seasmoke’s violent rejection of Steffon exposes the limits of treating that choice as an assignment.
Seasmoke approaches Addam of Hull
After the failed attempt, Seasmoke pursues Addam of Hull on the beach and approaches him. The scene raises the possibility that the dragon has chosen Addam, but does not show a completed bond. Rhaenyra does not know the man’s identity as she mounts Syrax and sets out to confront them. The episode ends this thread on a question rather than an answer: who, if anyone, will become Seasmoke’s rider?

Rhaena finds evidence of a wild dragon
In the Vale, Rhaena discovers scorched earth and animal remains. Lady Jeyne confirms that a wild dragon roams nearby. The signs give Rhaena a possible path toward a dragon of her own, but she does not claim one in this episode; the thread remains unresolved.
Daemon’s visions and the changing Riverlands

Grover Tully dies after Alys has treated him, and his grandson Oscar becomes Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. The visions can be read as an emotional reckoning, but that is an interpretation of the sequence; what the episode establishes is that Daemon remains troubled and the political situation around him is shifting.
Driftmark’s family tensions surface
Corlys appoints Alyn first mate. Alyn tries to conceal his white hair and family connection, while Addam is frustrated by his brother’s reluctance to acknowledge their lineage. That tension gives added context to Addam’s encounter with Seasmoke: the episode places his family identity and the possibility of a dragon’s attention side by side without resolving either into a settled future.

Rhaenyra and Mysaria cross a personal line
Mysaria tells Rhaenyra about her traumatic past, and the two kiss. The moment brings their personal intimacy into the same space as the political alliance they have built, complicating a partnership that has also been instrumental in shaping events in King’s Landing.
Why the title “Smallfolk” matters
The episode’s title points beyond the court and battlefield. Aemond can change appointments and order armies to march, but the hungry people of King’s Landing become active participants in the political struggle. Mysaria’s food delivery makes Rhaenyra’s cause visible in the city; the riot shows both the force of that gesture and the desperation surrounding it. At Harrenhal and on Driftmark, meanwhile, dragon power remains entangled with personal choice rather than simply obeying a ruler’s strategy.
