It is not a literal retelling: the clearest difference is that Adam Brody’s Noah is a rabbi, while Tikhman is Jewish but is not a rabbi or spiritual leader.
How Erin Foster’s real relationship inspired the series
Foster has described the premise as drawing on her experience of meeting a supportive, healthy partner after years of repeating self-sabotaging patterns in relationships. Netflix’s creator interview says real moments informed selected storylines and emotional dynamics, while cautioning that not every scene is autobiographical. Netflix Tudum’s interview with Foster is the clearest guide to that distinction.
Foster and Tikhman met in Los Angeles in 2018. In the Los Angeles Times’ account, Foster recalled feeling a tension between being happy with the person she was meant to be with and being inspired. Tikhman, who co-founded a music management company, supported her creative work. As he put it, “Also, this is what Erin’s supposed to be doing.”

Foster told Forbes that she retained the real-life element of falling in love with a Jewish man, but made Noah a rabbi to heighten the story. Tikhman’s Jewish identity and Noah’s religious vocation should not be conflated.

How Foster’s conversion and relationship experiences informed the story
Foster was raised without religion and later chose to convert to Judaism. The Los Angeles Times reports that her conversion process took ten weeks at American Jewish University. That biographical context informs the show’s interest in faith, belonging and the pressures of a relationship across different backgrounds, but it does not establish that every conversion question or conflict depicted happened to Foster exactly as shown.
Foster has described her husband as someone who challenged her self-sabotaging behavior and encouraged her to grow. In Netflix’s interview, she said: “My husband was just the first person who stood in front of me and said, ‘I won’t let you do that, this is stupid, so call me when you’re ready to grow up.’” The relationship dynamic is part of the inspiration; the show’s scenes remain fiction unless Foster has specifically identified them as real.

Not every recognizable moment came from Foster
Foster has also credited writers’ experiences as inspiration for particular moments. She said the season-two bedside-table moment happened to writer Sarah Heyward; Foster related to its romantic meaning rather than describing it as an event from her own life. This is one reason it is misleading to treat every scene that feels intimate or specific as a clue to Foster and Tikhman’s biography. Netflix Tudum’s interview discusses how real-life material contributed selectively.

The show’s portrayal has prompted differing reactions, rather than a single consensus among Jewish viewers. The Associated Press reported that Rabbi Elan Babchuck criticized aspects of the first season’s portrayal, while also saying, “I celebrate the show. I think representation matters across the board, even when it’s in flawed form.” Foster said a rabbi consultant read every script and joined the writers’ room. That consultation is relevant context, but it does not mean every viewer will agree with the series’ choices.

Brody also cautioned against treating one series as representative of an entire people: “Obviously, one show or group of characters can’t stand in for a whole civilization.” These comments reflect the perspectives of the people quoted, not a verdict on the show from all Jewish audiences. The AP’s report on the second season also notes that Foster remained an executive producer, while Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan took over as showrunners.
