Spoilers for “Moonlit,” NCIS Season 22, Episode 15. Dale Sawyer is back—and Vance puts him under Torres. That awkward pairing drives the case in “Moonlit,” while a revelation about Parker’s mother opens a separate mystery tied to Lily.
Why Sawyer is working under Torres
In “Moonlit,” Navy intelligence officer Robert Mozey is found dead with cocaine, a henna QR code and an alligator bite. The case brings Special Agent Dale Sawyer back into Torres’s orbit: Torres suspects him of dealing drugs after video places Sawyer near the cocaine.
Sawyer says he was working private security for Shayna Reynolds on the side. He intercepted the cocaine and handed it to Mozey, who was involved with Shayna. Vance disciplines Sawyer for moonlighting and reduces him to probationary status, assigning him to work under Torres—the agent least likely to welcome him.
How the case leads from Mozey to Clara Braden
The investigation moves to Shayna’s wealthy family and its land reserve. Shayna says she was trying to protect a mountain chorus frog habitat from a development deal. A video clue takes the team to a second body: Clara Braden, whose husband, Pete, is the family’s security chief.

Pete tries to recruit Sawyer to betray Torres. Sawyer appears to go along, but it is a feint; he and Torres cooperate to stop Braden. Their partnership does not erase their antagonism, but it shows they can work together when the case demands it.
What Parker learns about his mother
While the team works the murder case, Parker’s father, Roman, tells him that Parker’s mother died in a car crash after an argument. That contradicts Roman’s earlier account that she died of a stroke.

At the end of the episode, Parker finds an old image from the crash scene that appears to show Lily. “Moonlit” offers the image as a clue, not an explanation: it does not establish Lily’s identity or spell out her connection to the crash. CBS’s official synopsis likewise describes a “shocking connection” without resolving it.
What Torres does with Kate Reynolds’s offer
After the case, Kate Reynolds offers Torres and Sawyer security jobs. Sawyer declines. Torres keeps Kate’s business card, leaving the possibility open without confirming that he plans to leave NCIS.
