My Lady Jane is an eight-episode Prime Video romantic fantasy that takes the story of England’s “Nine-Day Queen” and deliberately sends it in another direction. It keeps Jane Grey, the succession crisis and the Tudor setting, then adds shapeshifters, sharp modern humor and an alternate fate. Watch it for irreverent adventure and romance—not as a historically faithful account of Jane’s life.

What is My Lady Jane about?

Released on Prime Video on June 27, 2024, the series adapts the novel My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows. Emily Bader plays Jane Grey, Edward Bluemel plays Guildford Dudley, and Jordan Peters plays King Edward. The ensemble also includes Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon and Jim Broadbent. Amazon’s series overview describes an alternate history in which Edward survives, Jane and Guildford avoid execution, and Jane becomes queen amid a struggle for the throne.

That premise makes the show’s central promise clear: it borrows recognizable people and political tensions from Tudor history, but it is not trying to reconstruct events. Its fantasy elements and changed outcome are part of the design.

How historically accurate is My Lady Jane?

Only its broad historical starting point is real. Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen in July 1553, and the Royal Family dates her reign to July 10–19. Edward VI died on July 6, 1553; as TIME’s historical explainer notes, the legality of his succession arrangement was contested because Parliament had not passed it.

The real Jane’s interests and predicament differ sharply from the show’s heroine and plot. TIME’s account, drawing on biographers Nicola Tallis and Leanda de Lisle, describes Jane’s academic interests, including languages and theology, and the political and religious conflict surrounding the succession. The animal-transforming Ethians, the altered religious conflict, and Jane’s survival and romanticized alternative fate are inventions. They should be understood as fantasy, not as claims about Tudor history.

For more on the historical figure, consult the Royal Family’s biography of Lady Jane Grey alongside the series. It records her short reign without the show’s alternate-history premise.

What is the tone—and who is it for?

The show’s appeal is its willingness to be knowingly anachronistic. It mixes political intrigue and romance with fantasy shapeshifting, sexual humor and a modern comic voice rather than maintaining the restraint of a conventional period drama.

In The Standard, Vicky Jessop praises the cast’s energy and the entertainment value for viewers who enjoy sarcasm and revisionist history, while noting that the narration can become tiresome and the plotting may be hard to follow. Janet Mullany’s Telly Visions review likewise frames it as an adventurous, not-quite-historical fantasy and praises its cast, costumes and settings.

Those are critics’ assessments, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond. The useful test is whether you want playful invention or historical fidelity: the show favors romance, comic anachronism and fantasy over a restrained political biography.

Is My Lady Jane worth watching?

It is a good fit if you enjoy period settings used as a springboard for irreverent fantasy, lively performances and a romantic alternative to a tragic historical outcome. It is a poor fit if you want Jane Grey’s life dramatized closely, or if a knowingly modern voice and busy plotting are likely to distract you. The series is best approached on its own terms—as a Tudor-inspired romantic adventure, not a lesson in the succession crisis.

Rotten Tomatoes’ series page listed a 95% Tomatometer from 38 reviews and a 91% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings at the time it was checked. Those are changing platform figures, not fixed measures of quality or a universal audience verdict; see the current Rotten Tomatoes listing for its live snapshot.
