Spoilers for Netflix’s Lonely Planet. Katherine and Owen’s final scene strongly suggests they are giving their relationship another chance: after her book launch, Katherine apologizes, follows Owen as he leaves, and kisses him. But the film does not confirm that they stay together long-term.
What happens at the end of Lonely Planet?
Roughly a year after their time in Morocco, Katherine and Owen meet again at a bar following the launch of Katherine’s book. Katherine follows Owen when he leaves, apologizes for the way she ended things, and kisses him. The sequence offers the film’s clearest sign that both are open to reconnecting. It stops short of showing what happens to them after that moment. ComingSoon’s October 14, 2024 ending recap describes the closing events.
Why did Katherine and Owen split?
Their earlier breakup follows the theft of Katherine’s bag, which held her laptop and the writing she had been working on. Devastated by the loss, she ends the relationship and returns to New York alone. By the time of the reunion, Owen’s relationship with Lily has also ended. Katherine’s apology and decision to follow him make the final kiss feel like a choice to reopen a relationship that had been cut off in crisis, rather than a chance encounter without emotional weight. The recap is the source for these closing plot details.
Does the ending confirm they stay together?
No. The kiss points toward reconciliation, but there is no subsequent scene confirming that Katherine and Owen build a lasting life together. The most precise reading is that they appear to get back together—or at least agree to try again—while the film leaves the outcome open. A kiss is shown; a permanent happily-ever-after is not.

What does Katherine’s new book suggest?
Katherine’s new book is titled The Swing Route. The title may echo Owen’s earlier football metaphor about finding hope in a mess, linking her creative work to what she experienced with him. That connection is a plausible interpretation of the ending, not a confirmed explanation of the title.

Netflix presents Lonely Planet as a romance about a reclusive novelist who travels to a writers’ retreat in Morocco and meets a younger man. Writer and director Susannah Grant described her intention as making a film about how travel can reveal a person’s life and sense of self. That framing helps explain why Katherine’s return to Owen is tied to a broader change in how she sees herself, but it does not settle the couple’s future. Grant’s statement and Netflix’s film guide were published October 11, 2024.

Laura Dern, who plays Katherine, told Netflix: “Katherine has spent her life dedicated to narrative and therefore [hasn’t spent] much time looking at deep truth within.” The final reunion can be read as part of Katherine confronting that inner truth: she takes the risk of telling Owen she is sorry rather than ending the story on her own terms and leaving it there. Dern’s statement appears in the same Netflix guide.
Netflix’s official trailer calls Katherine and Owen’s relationship a “life-altering love affair,” but that promotional description is not evidence that their relationship lasts beyond the film’s final scene. The trailer page introduces the romance; the ending itself leaves the future unresolved.
