Spoilers: Gary Hinge’s final footage shows a human-like figure attack him at the cabin. That makes a violent human attacker the most literal explanation for what happens to him, but the film cuts off before identifying the figure or explaining its motive. It leaves the strange sounds—and whether anything supernatural is involved—unresolved.

What happens in the ending?

The film presents Gary’s disappearance through a documentary-style investigation and footage attributed to him. In the final sequence, Gary returns to the cabin he had encountered earlier. He hears distorted sounds, sees a figure approach, tries to get away, and is attacked. The camera stops recording during the encounter, so viewers do not see what happens afterward or get a clear view that establishes the attacker’s identity.

The on-screen event is an assault by a human-like figure. The ending does not show a body, a confirmed rescue, or an investigation that resolves what happened to Gary.

What killed Gary Hinge?

The most direct reading is that a violent human attacker kills—or at least attacks—Gary. The figure’s approach and the physical assault fit that interpretation without requiring an explanation beyond what the footage depicts. But the film does not confirm who the attacker is, why they are at the cabin, or what ultimately happens to Gary after the recording ends.

A supernatural or otherwise unexplained force is another possible interpretation, especially given the distorted sounds and the film’s unsettling atmosphere. That reading goes beyond what the final footage establishes. The film leaves the cause open rather than confirming a monster, entity, or other specific explanation.

Reading What it accounts for What it cannot establish
Human attacker Most directly matches the human-like figure approaching and attacking Gary. The attacker’s identity, motive, and Gary’s fate after the camera cuts off.
Supernatural or unexplained force Can accommodate the strange sounds and uncanny atmosphere. The film does not confirm a supernatural cause or identify a specific entity.

Why does Gary go back to the cabin?

One explanation in the film’s ending coverage is that Gary faces online pressure to revisit the cabin and prove what he says he experienced. Curiosity may also play a part. The footage does not reduce his decision to one certain motive, but the pressure to substantiate his account helps explain why he returns after an earlier frightening encounter.

Was Gary Hinge a real missing hiker?

No: the documentary-like presentation is a storytelling device, not evidence that Gary Hinge’s case files, footage, disappearance, or attack are real. A secondary article has compared the film’s premise with the real-life disappearance of Kenny Veach, but that reported resemblance does not establish that the fictional events happened or that Veach was confirmed as the story’s source.

Why does the film leave the ending ambiguous?

Writer-director Dutch Marich described unanswered questions as part of the film’s mockumentary realism: “The mockumentary approach lends itself to total realism, which, to me, means leaving some questions unanswered is not only acceptable but bolsters the realism.” He made the comment in a Dread Central interview published May 23, 2021.

That approach explains why the film can show an attack without supplying a complete case resolution. Marich also said in that 2021 interview that the strange cabin music would make more sense in Part 2, while describing the sequel as in development at the time. Those were comments about the project’s status and plans then; they do not establish its current release or franchise status.
