Alice, Anna Andrews’s mother, killed Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. After learning that the three women had enabled the assault of Anna and her classmate Catherine—later known as Lexy—Alice took revenge and framed Lexy. The finale confirms Alice’s guilt, but leaves Anna’s next choice unresolved: she knows the truth about her mother, while Jack does not.
Who is the killer in His & Hers?
Alice is the killer of Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. Lexy, whose original name is Catherine Kelly, is not responsible for those murders. Alice frames her, turning a plausible suspect into a false solution to the case. Netflix’s finale recap confirms Alice’s confession and explains how the series planted clues to her guilt.
Why Lexy appears to be the answer
Anna recognizes her work rival Lexy as Catherine Kelly, a former classmate who was present during the assault of Anna and Catherine as teenagers. Lexy has a personal grievance against Anna, and her connection to the past makes her look capable of seeking revenge. At the lake house, Lexy tries to shoot Anna. Jack intervenes, and Priya fatally shoots Lexy. The apparent resolution is misleading: Lexy did not kill Rachel, Helen, or Zoe.
Alice’s confession changes the case
A year later, Anna finds a letter in which Alice admits to the murders and to framing Lexy. Alice’s confession recasts behavior that others took as signs of dementia: according to Netflix’s recap, she deliberately acted in ways that encouraged that assumption.

Why did Alice kill the women?
Alice’s motive is retaliation for what happened to Anna. After Anna’s baby, Charlotte, dies while in Alice’s care, Anna withdraws from her family. Alice watches Anna’s old home recordings to feel close to her and sees footage revealing that Rachel, Helen, and Zoe orchestrated and watched the assault of teenage Anna and Catherine. Catherine also suffered an assault and fled.
Alice interprets the women’s role in that violence as something for which they deserve punishment. That explains her motive; it does not make the murders justice. The old recordings are also important to the adaptation: they give Alice the discovery that triggers her revenge.

What clues point to Alice?
- Bare footprints: Director William Oldroyd told Netflix that Alice’s bare feet after Rachel’s murder match the bare footprints at the crime scene. Investigators focus on a Timberland boot print and mistake two different sets of bare footprints for one.
- Apparent dementia: The official recap describes Alice putting eggshells in breakfast and walking nude in public after the first killing. These are deliberate signals meant to make people believe she is cognitively impaired and not in control.
- Familiarity with the school: TIME reports that Alice had worked as a janitor at the school, a detail that helps explain her familiarity with the place where Helen is killed. It is an opportunity clue, not proof of guilt on its own.
- Access to Anna’s recordings: Alice’s access to the home footage connects her discovery of the assault to her motive. In the series, the footage is a key part of how she learns what happened.
Does the series have the same ending as the book?
The central reveal is the same: Alice is the killer in both the Netflix adaptation and Alice Feeney’s novel. The route to that reveal differs. TheWrap’s interview about the adaptation describes the novel as using three perspectives—Anna, Jack, and “The Killer”—while the series conveys the killer’s presence through Alice’s letter, voiced by Anna.
| Element | Netflix series | Novel |
|---|---|---|
| Killer’s identity | Alice, Anna’s mother | Alice, Anna’s mother |
| How the assault is revealed to Alice | Alice watches Anna’s old home footage | According to director William Oldroyd, Anna’s suicide note is the relevant discovery |
| How the killer’s perspective is presented | Alice’s letter, voiced by Anna | One of three perspectives: Anna, Jack, and “The Killer” |
Oldroyd described the novel’s ending as “totally believable and merited and moving” when discussing why he wanted to adapt it, as reported by Netflix Tudum. The shared answer to who killed the women does not mean the book and series reveal the motive in the same way.

What does the ending leave unresolved?
Anna and Jack reconcile, raise Zoe’s daughter, and expect another child. But Anna does not tell Jack that Alice killed Zoe—Jack’s sister. In the Netflix interview, Oldroyd calls it another secret between the spouses and says the truth would be “quite a lot for Jack to stomach.”
The closing look between Anna and Alice does not settle what Anna will do. It can be read as recognition, complicity, or uncertainty, but the finale does not confirm that Anna will protect her mother forever or expose her. The unresolved question is not Alice’s guilt; it is what Anna will do with what she knows.
