Yes—especially if the show’s mix of sharp industry satire and an uneasy, deeply funny creative partnership is what you come for. Deborah Vance’s late-night ambition gives the nine-episode season a clear career goal, while her relationship with Ava remains its emotional and comic engine. The result feels less like a repeat of earlier conflicts than a fresh test of what these two can make together.
What is Hacks Season 3 about?
The season picks up a year after Season 2. Deborah, played by Jean Smart, is pursuing a place in late-night television—a male-dominated arena that makes her ambition both a professional challenge and a pointed source of satire. Ava, played by Hannah Einbinder, remains bound to Deborah through their work as comedian and writer, even as differences in age, power and temperament keep their collaboration volatile.
That career storyline gives Season 3 a useful focus: Deborah is not simply trying to stay relevant, but to claim a kind of platform that has historically been harder for women to access. Her ambitions also recall the influence of Joan Rivers, connecting the season’s fictional struggle to the larger history of women in post-primetime comedy. The plot is best approached at this high level; the available episode information does not establish a reliable episode-by-episode synopsis.
Does Deborah and Ava’s partnership still work?
It does, because the show makes their friction productive rather than treating it as a disagreement that can be permanently settled. Deborah’s experience and instinct for performance meet Ava’s perspective and writing, but neither character simply becomes the other’s student. Their differences create jokes, expose the power imbalance between them and give the season’s career story personal stakes: Deborah’s success may depend on collaboration, while Ava has to reckon with what that collaboration asks of her.

The accumulated history matters. TIME’s Judy Berman argued that the series is hitting its stride, noting that a cast and writing staff can need several seasons to learn how to make one another more effective. That is a useful way to understand the season’s strength: the chemistry feels earned through the characters’ prior collisions, not added as a shortcut to warmth.
How strong are the performances and comedy?
Smart anchors the season with a Deborah who is ambitious, funny and difficult to reduce to either a triumphant trailblazer or a cautionary tale. Seitz’s assessment at RogerEbert.com was especially strong: “The excellent writing invigorates the cast, leading Emmy winner Jean Smart to her best performance on this series (and arguably anywhere).” That is a critic’s judgment, not a measurable fact, but it captures how the writing gives the ensemble room to sharpen the material.

Einbinder’s Ava remains essential to that balance. The show’s comedy works best when the two women’s competing instincts are allowed to coexist: a joke can land as a clash of sensibilities and, at the same time, reveal the cost of being dependent on someone you distrust or resent. The late-night setting extends that approach into workplace satire, where access, image and professional power shape who gets to define what counts as funny.
What makes Season 3 feel like a step forward?
Its central career arc brings the show’s concerns into closer alignment. Deborah’s effort to reach late night supplies an external objective; the workplace barriers make the industry satire specific; and Ava’s role keeps that objective from turning into a solo success story. The season can therefore move between the absurdity of entertainment-business maneuvering and the more intimate question of how two artists use—and sometimes exploit—their partnership.

This is not a claim that every joke or conflict is new. Rather, the season benefits from letting earlier character history do work. TIME’s emphasis on the ensemble’s growing fluency helps explain why familiar tensions can feel more layered: the cast has had time to establish how each person changes the others’ timing, choices and reactions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: Is Hacks Season 3 worth watching?
Yes. Season 3 gives Deborah a consequential new professional target without losing sight of the relationship that makes the show distinctive. Its best work comes from letting workplace satire, generational disagreement and affection complicate one another rather than separating them into different kinds of story. If you have watched the first two seasons, this is a particularly satisfying continuation; newcomers will get more from the partnership’s history by starting at the beginning.
