Spoilers for both seasons of Gyeongseong Creature. The first season’s post-credit scene jumps from 1945 Gyeongseong to Seoul in 2024, where a man named Ho-jae looks like Jang Tae-sang and bears a mysterious scar. Season two answers the central question: Ho-jae is Tae-sang, alive decades later after najin-related events but without his memories of his former life. Chae-ok also survived through najin infection. The time jump carries their unfinished story into the present—and season two ends by opening a new question about whether the najin threat is over.
What does the season-one cliffhanger mean?
The scene after season one’s finale moves the story forward 78 years, from the 1945 setting to Seoul in 2024. Netflix described that span in its 2024 announcement. The man called Ho-jae resembles Tae-sang, and a scar raises questions about his identity and what happened to him. At the time, the scene left those questions open; it was a deliberate bridge to the modern-day story, not confirmation that Ho-jae was a descendant or a different person. Netflix’s announcement of the post-credit scene framed Ho-jae’s identity as a mystery.
Is Ho-jae Tae-sang?
Yes. Season two reveals that Ho-jae is Jang Tae-sang, living in the modern era after najin-related events. He has no memories of his earlier life or of Chae-ok, so the resemblance in the post-credit scene is a clue to a real identity, not merely a visual parallel. TIME quotes actor Park Seo-joon describing Ho-jae and Tae-sang as the same character, changed by what he has lived through. Marie Claire’s season-two finale recap details the amnesia reveal, and TIME’s season-two coverage discusses the character’s transformation.
How did Chae-ok survive?
Chae-ok survives because the najin enters her body after she appears to die. Season two establishes that the infection carries her into the modern era. TIME describes the parasite as restoring her from death and giving her a long life and fighting abilities. Her survival is therefore part of the same supernatural mechanism that connects the historical and present-day stories, rather than a separate explanation for the time jump. Netflix’s season-two announcement identifies her survival after drinking najin as a question raised by the first season’s finale.

What does the scar mean?
The scar is a clue that Ho-jae’s apparent new life conceals a history tied to Tae-sang. Netflix initially called it mysterious, and the season-one tag does not, on its own, explain its origin. The available finale coverage does not establish a separate symbolic meaning for it, so it is best read as part of the identity mystery rather than proof of one specific experiment or event.
What is season two’s ending saying?
A possible reunion, not a completed resolution
The finale’s future-set closing image brings Chae-ok and Ho-jae into one another’s view again. It suggests that they may begin a relationship anew, but it does not show them speaking or settle what happens next. Director Chung Dong-yoon told Marie Claire that he wanted the season to focus on Ho-jae and Chae-ok’s love story and “show how they are still loving each other and running towards each other. I also wanted to show the remnants of the past that we still see in the modern day.” The image fits that aim: the bond persists, while the characters’ shared history remains unresolved.

The post-credit scene points to another najin threat
Season two’s own post-credit tag returns to Jeonseung Biotech. Seung-jo directs scientists handling mysterious vials, indicating that the danger associated with najin may continue. The scene does not confirm a citywide or national outbreak; that would go beyond what it shows. The hook is narrower and more unsettling: the people and institutions connected to the earlier experiments may still be at work. Marie Claire’s finale recap describes the tag and its implications.
Why move the story from 1945 to 2024?
The 78-year jump lets the series follow the consequences of its historical story rather than treating the finale as a clean break. The najin links the characters across generations of time, while Tae-sang’s lost memories and Chae-ok’s survival give their relationship a different shape in modern Seoul. The setting also makes the past visible in the present: the experiments and their human costs do not simply disappear when the era changes.

Chung has described the creature as an experimental subject, saying, “Our drama’s creature is a transformed experimental subject exposed to anthrax, so rather than being depicted as overly strong or large, we wanted to focus on the emotional aspects.” In a separate interview with The Korea Times, he said the historical message was that “forgiveness and forgetting are different.” Those are the director’s framings of the drama’s themes, not a definitive interpretation of its historical setting.
