‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ Review: Sam Rockwell Is Electric in Gore Verbinski’s Bonkers Sci-Fi Satire

Sam Rockwell electrifies Gore Verbinski’s AI-apocalypse comedy, though its ambitious opening proves difficult to sustain across a lengthy, wayward adventure.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die has a sharp, timely premise and a wonderfully volatile Sam Rockwell at its center. Gore Verbinski’s science-fiction dark comedy begins with an irresistible diner confrontation, then sprawls into a more uneven, lengthy adventure—an ambitious satire whose energy is easier to admire than its follow-through.

What is Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die about?

A man claiming to have come from the future walks into a Los Angeles diner and recruits a group of patrons for a mission to stop an AI apocalypse. The official synopsis connects the threat to social-media “brainrot,” framing the crisis not just as a technological disaster but as a consequence of how people spend their attention and withdraw from ordinary life.

That setup gives the film room to mix speculative science fiction, action, and dark comedy. Its central question is less whether technology can become dangerous than whether people can be persuaded to notice what is happening around them—and act together before it is too late. The film’s premise is satire, not evidence about how prevalent any particular technology habit is in real life.

Does Sam Rockwell make the film work?

Rockwell plays the unnamed, exhausted messenger from the future, a role built around urgency that keeps breaking into absurdity. His restless physicality and off-kilter charm give the diner scenes a jolt: he can make a warning feel both alarming and ridiculous without draining the scene of momentum.

Associated Press critic Jake Coyle gave the film two and a half stars out of four and called it “a remarkably well-suited role for Rockwell, whose stumbling charm lifts ‘Good Luck’ nearly as much as Johnny Depp did in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’” Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus is more enthusiastic, highlighting Rockwell’s performance and describing the movie as a “gleeful high-concept comedy.” On the film’s most consistent strength, the two assessments converge: Rockwell supplies a compelling human center for its unruly premise.

How well does the satire and story hold together?

The opening has an immediate advantage: a confined public space, strangers forced into a decision, and a visitor whose claims are too extreme to ignore. From there, the film expands into the recruited characters’ backstories and a broader, more kinetic adventure. That change of scale creates opportunities for visual invention, but it also loosens the grip of the original setup.

Coyle’s main reservation is that the strong opening is difficult to sustain. He finds the narrative increasingly wayward and the runtime excessive. That criticism matters because the film’s satire depends on the story carrying its ideas forward, rather than relying on the urgency of the premise alone. Rotten Tomatoes’ warmer consensus treats the serious message as an important part of the comedy, while Coyle sees less control in the follow-through. The result is a film whose technology-and-attention anxieties are clear, even when its story does not stay equally focused.

What are the film’s strongest and weakest points?

Element What works Where it falters
Rockwell’s performance His frantic, stumbling charm gives the future messenger energy and comic unpredictability. The performance can enliven the film, but cannot by itself keep the expanding story tightly shaped.
Visual style and action Coyle notes the film’s kinetic kick and Verbinski’s eye for detail. The escalating, gonzo approach contributes to a narrative that Coyle finds increasingly wayward.
Premise and satire The AI-apocalypse setup links speculative danger with social-media distraction and disengagement. Coyle questions whether the film follows through on its ideas as effectively as its opening promises.
Pacing The opening diner sequence quickly establishes the stakes and the film’s dark-comic tone. Coyle considers the lengthy runtime a liability and the later story less controlled.

Who made it, and how long is it?

Gore Verbinski directed the film, with a screenplay by Matthew Robinson. The ensemble includes Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, Asim Chaudhry, Juno Temple, and Tom Taylor. Constantin Film lists the U.S. theatrical release as February 13, 2026. The movie is rated R for pervasive language, violence, some grisly images, and brief sexual content, according to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Where can you watch Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die?

Universal announced digital purchase or rental beginning March 10, 2026, followed by 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions from April 21, 2026. Universal’s release says purchases at participating retailers include a making-of feature; its film page lists digital and physical formats. Availability and retailer terms can vary.

Rotten Tomatoes listed Disney+ and Hulu as subscription streaming options when accessed on October 4, 2026. That is a dated listing, not a guarantee of availability in every country or at a later date.

Verdict: a messy sci-fi ride powered by Rockwell

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is most persuasive when Rockwell’s mercurial performance, Verbinski’s visual detail, and the diner-bound premise collide. Its later sprawl makes the satire less disciplined than its setup suggests, but the film’s comic nerve and central performance give the chaos a pulse. Viewers looking for a neatly calibrated cautionary tale may find its route too wayward; those open to a deliberately bonkers, darkly comic adventure will find plenty of invention along the way.
