Stephen Amell said the Green Arrow joke in Peacemaker’s first-season finale felt unnecessary, but he also made clear he was not actually angry at John Cena. In a September 2024 interview, Amell recalled thinking “f*ck those guys” when he heard the line and said his criticism was aimed at the writing, not Cena personally.
What was the Green Arrow joke?
In the Peacemaker season-one finale, Peacemaker delivers a vulgar joke about Green Arrow wearing a costume depicting the back half of Twilight Sparkle, the My Little Pony character. The exchange is described in contemporaneous reports by CinemaBlend and ComicBook.com.
What did Stephen Amell say?
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet in an interview published September 15, 2024, Amell called the jab “a little unnecessary” and said, “I didn’t f*cking appreciate that at all.” Recalling his immediate response, he added: “Again, I’m not actually mad, but like, just remember hearing that and being like f*ck those guys! Seriously.”
He connected his reaction to what he saw as years of dismissive treatment of Arrow and the wider Arrowverse. Amell said he had worked hard on the series and described the challenge of playing a superhero without superpowers for “23 episodes a year.” That number was his personal description of the workload in the interview, not an independently verified production statistic.

Was Amell angry at John Cena?
No—not according to Amell’s own clarification. He said he was “not actually mad” and stressed that his response was not a personal vendetta against Cena, who plays Peacemaker. Amell described Cena as a very nice person and said that, if he should be frustrated with anyone over the joke, it would be James Gunn for writing it. His point was about the line and what he perceived as disrespect toward Arrow, rather than a personal attack on Cena.
