The Mule tells Hari a disturbing story about his childhood on Rossem, but the episode stops short of confirming it. Meanwhile, New Terminus falls under the Mule’s control, and Dusk and Quent’s increasingly intimate relationship unfolds amid political turmoil on Trantor.
What happens in “Foundation’s End”?
Released August 22, 2025, “Foundation’s End” is Season 3, Episode 7 of Foundation. Apple lists its runtime as 59 minutes. The official synopsis sets the two main locations: “Chaos and destruction rain down on New Terminus. Back on Trantor, Dusk and Quent unite to assess the state of the galaxy.” (Apple TV episode listing)
Is the Mule’s childhood story true?
The episode opens with the Mule describing a childhood on Rossem shaped by Foundation rule. In his version of events, Foundation assessors enforce a one-child policy against a family with a newborn. Later, his father intends to drown him; the child’s mentalic abilities emerge during the attempted killing. He takes his baby brother to the neighbors, then leaves to join a pirate he sees as less exploitative than the Foundation.
That account is not presented as a verified record. After hearing it, Hari responds, “That’s a very tragic story. I wonder how much of it is true.” The episode leaves the Mule’s reliability unresolved, so the story may illuminate how he understands himself without establishing that every detail happened as told. How the Mule’s control changes New Terminus
The Mule’s story arrives alongside a decisive turn on New Terminus. Mayor Indbur welcomes him, and the Foundation surrenders. Han Pritcher escapes custody while Toran tries to get Bayta to safety. Under the Mule’s influence, Randu Mallow confronts Toran; during the attempted escape, Toran’s escape pod kills Randu. The surrender and Randu’s death make the Mule’s expanding control concrete: it reshapes political allegiance and turns an escape into a fatal confrontation. (TV Obsessive recap, August 23, 2025)

How Pilou Asbæk interprets the Mule
Actor Pilou Asbæk, who plays the Mule, said he found vulnerability in the character and that the Mule’s trauma made his behavior understandable to him as a performer. “No one is a villain. No one is born a villain. It’s something you become by life, because life treats you shitty sometimes, sadly enough,” he told Tom’s Guide in an interview published August 23, 2025. That is Asbæk’s interpretation of the role, not a confirmation that the Mule’s account is true or the episode’s sole intended reading.
