Spoilers for “Shadows in the Math.” Hari abandons his plan to enter cryosleep alongside Gaal each year, choosing instead to stay awake and prepare the Mentalics for the Mule. That decision leaves Gaal asleep for generations and changes the balance between mentor and student. Meanwhile, Empire faces an unforeseen prediction, and Pritcher pursues an investigation into the Mule.
“Shadows in the Math” is the second episode of Foundation season 3. Apple’s US listing gives it a July 18, 2025 release date, a 48-minute runtime, and a TV-MA rating. Its synopsis follows three strands: Gaal and Hari on Ignis, Empire responding to an unforeseen prediction, and Pritcher seeking help to investigate the Mule. Apple TV’s episode listing identifies the episode and its broad plot setup.
What happens on Ignis?
The episode’s central turn is Hari’s decision to break with the arrangement Gaal expected: that they would both enter and leave cryosleep annually. Instead, Hari remains awake, devoting the intervening time to helping the Mentalics understand psychohistory and preparing them for the threat posed by the Mule. This is not simply a change of schedule. Hari chooses a path that gives Gaal no equal say in their shared plan, while also committing himself to a longer stretch of work without her beside him.
Why does Gaal wake up so much later?
TechRadar’s episode recap reports that Hari leaves Gaal in cryosleep for 146 years. When she wakes, 152 years have passed since the end of season 2, and Hari is frail and old. The figures describe the story’s fictional chronology, not elapsed real-world time. The gap makes the consequences of Hari’s decision visible: Gaal returns to a changed relationship and a future Hari has spent years preparing for without her.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The shift also loosens the teacher-and-student pattern that has defined their partnership. Jared Harris, who plays Hari, described the intended change in their dynamic with the fragment, “I wanted to see that relationship move on,” as reported by TechRadar. The episode’s time jump makes that movement concrete by bringing Gaal back to an aged Hari rather than restoring their earlier rhythm.
What is happening beyond Ignis?
| Story strand | What the episode’s official synopsis establishes | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| Ignis | Gaal and Hari advance their plans there. | The synopsis does not specify every step or the full consequences of those plans. |
| Empire | Empire grapples with an unforeseen prediction. | The synopsis does not identify the prediction’s full content or settle what it means for the Cleons. |
| Pritcher and the Mule | Pritcher enlists help to investigate the Mule. | The synopsis does not explain the Mule’s abilities, limits, or intentions. |
These threads give the episode a wider frame than Hari and Gaal’s separation: a crisis of prediction at the imperial center and an effort to learn more about the Mule. The official description supports those broad developments, but it is not enough to treat fan questions about hidden Cleon motives or the Mule’s exact powers as confirmed answers.

What does the final Kalle scene mean?
TechRadar reports that Kalle appears to Hari later that night, recalling Kalle’s role in restoring him during season 2. The scene connects the present story to that earlier intervention, but the available episode reporting does not establish what Kalle wants or what will follow from the encounter. It is best read as a significant unresolved beat, not as a settled explanation of Hari’s future.
Why does the Mule’s shadow loom over the episode?
The Mule is a looming threat because Hari’s work with the Mentalics is explicitly framed as preparation for him, while Pritcher’s separate investigation signals that the danger matters beyond Ignis. The episode’s confirmed details set up a question rather than answer it: what can the Mule do, and will the Mentalics be ready? The title encourages viewers to think about influence extending beyond what is directly shown, but the episode’s synopsis and reporting do not resolve the Mule’s limits or plan.

Likewise, the unforeseen prediction confronting Empire invites speculation about what the Cleons know or conceal. Those are reasonable questions to carry forward, not established revelations in the episode description. Apple’s official episode listing and Apple TV Press’s season page confirm the episode’s place in season 3; the broader mysteries remain part of the unfolding story.

A refresher on season 2’s ending can help orient you to the time jump and Kalle’s appearance, especially if you need to recall how Hari was restored. The most essential context for this episode, though, is the changed plan between Hari and Gaal: she expected them to share a recurring cryosleep arrangement, while he chose to remain awake and work toward the Mentalics’ readiness.
