New Battalion Chief Brett Richards (Shawn Hatosy) arrives at Station 42 demanding that the crew follow fundamentals under pressure. His clash with Bode comes to a head during a wildfire evacuation, where helping displaced residents conflicts with getting them out quickly—and Bode’s instinct to save a dog raises fresh fears about his safety and recovery.
What happens in “Not A Stray”?
In the episode, which CBS lists as airing October 24, 2025, Brett Richards takes charge of Station 42 with a blunt, fundamentals-first approach. CBS describes the hour as a high-stakes wildfire situation that tests the crew’s unity, leadership and resilience. Brett’s arrival turns that pressure into a direct challenge to the way Bode and his colleagues make decisions.
Brett puts Station 42 through a drill
Brett stages a false-alarm response drill and criticizes how the station handles the call and asks questions. His point is that knowing the rules is not the same as following them when events move quickly. It is a deliberately hard lesson: Station 42’s experience and instincts can help in a crisis, but Brett sees habits that may leave room for dangerous mistakes.
Bode and Jake delay the evacuation
On a wildfire call near a woodland encampment, residents are still trying to gather belongings after the destructive Zabel Ridge Fire. Brett orders a complete evacuation. Bode and Jake disobey, giving people more time to move what they can carry. Their choice is compassionate, but it costs time as the fire spreads and danger increases.

The conflict is not simply procedure versus indifference. A prompt evacuation is meant to protect lives; the residents have already lost so much that leaving possessions behind is another painful demand. Bode and Jake respond to that human reality, while Brett focuses on the risk of waiting. The episode makes the consequences of both priorities tangible rather than treating either side as an easy answer.
Why does Brett clash with Bode?
Brett believes Station 42’s willingness to improvise has become a loose relationship with the basics. He ties that criticism to Vince’s death, making his insistence on procedure personal and contentious for a crew still grieving. For Bode, Brett’s approach feels less like coaching than an attack on the station and its history.

Bode later asks Sharon to remove Brett. She refuses, leaving the new chief in place and the conflict unresolved. Brett’s intervention can read as a needed push for Bode, but the episode does not make him unquestionably right: the evacuation order protects people from a growing threat, while Bode’s objection comes from seeing what another loss means to residents already displaced.
Does Bode relapse in this episode?
Not in the painkiller scene described in the episode coverage. Bode attempts to swallow a painkiller, then spits it out before swallowing it. It is a near-relapse moment, not a completed relapse. The scene shows how close temptation can feel without erasing the choice he makes to stop.

Why does Bode run into the fire?
Bode risks himself to save a dog. Sharon sees the act through the fear of losing someone else after Vince’s death, while Brett says he will prevent Bode from taking that kind of risk. That response sharpens the disagreement between them: Bode acts on an immediate impulse to protect a vulnerable animal, but Sharon and Brett see a firefighter putting himself in danger when the crew can least afford another loss.

The episode also follows the effort to keep Three Rock alive, which takes an unfortunate turn for Eve. That thread adds to the story’s broader atmosphere of grief and uncertainty, though the central conflict remains Brett’s effort to change Station 42 and Bode’s resistance to his authority.
