Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 opened to $64 million domestically and has a listed worldwide gross of $238.6 million, even as critics rated it far below audiences. Its opening also set a specific record: the biggest box-office debut ever for the weekend after Thanksgiving, according to a December 2025 report. That is a release-period record—not an all-time box-office record.
How big was Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 at the box office?
Box Office Mojo lists a domestic opening of $64,007,430 and a current worldwide gross of $238,569,800. The database’s totals, accessed October 5, 2026, break down this way:
| Measure | Listed amount |
|---|---|
| Domestic opening | $64,007,430 |
| Domestic gross | $127,730,290 |
| International gross | $110,839,510 |
| Worldwide gross | $238,569,800 |
These are Box Office Mojo’s current listed figures, not a studio-reported final production result. The opening itself was the clearest measure of the film’s immediate draw: it took in $64 million domestically on debut.
What box-office record did it set?
The Associated Press reported on December 7, 2025, that the film had the biggest opening ever for the weekend after Thanksgiving. AP also described it at the time as the biggest opening of 2025 for a PG-13 film and the year’s second-biggest horror opening. Those rankings are tied to the release-period reporting; they should not be read as permanent or all-time horror records.

The sequel arrived exclusively in U.S. theaters on December 5, 2025. That differed from the 2023 original, which opened with Peacock availability as well as theatrical play. Universal domestic distribution head Jim Orr told AP: “There’s been a lot of doom and gloom about the industry overall, but this movie helped drive the industry to the biggest first weekend post-Thanksgiving ever.”
How did critics and audiences rate the sequel?
Rotten Tomatoes showed a pronounced split when accessed October 5, 2026:

| Rotten Tomatoes measure | Score and sample |
|---|---|
| Tomatometer | 17% from 132 critic reviews |
| Popcornmeter | 82% from 5,000+ verified audience ratings |
The percentages are live platform measures and can change as reviews or ratings accumulate. They also measure different groups and are not interchangeable with ticket sales. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus calls the sequel a step down from an already clunky original, while its audience summary highlights fan service, atmosphere, and scares. Those are the site’s editorial summaries, not a survey of every critic or viewer.
Did audiences actually recommend it?
In separate PostTrak polling reported by AP on December 7, 2025, 70% of surveyed ticket buyers said they would “definitely” recommend the movie. That result is a poll of ticket buyers, distinct from Rotten Tomatoes’ audience percentage; neither figure establishes why people chose to attend.

The available audience comments point to a useful caveat for newcomers. One Rotten Tomatoes user wrote, “Definitely worth a watch if you enjoy the fnaf franchise,” while another said, “I don’t think it would as enjoyable if you are not familiar with it.” These are individual reactions rather than representative findings. The evidence supports saying the franchise connection mattered to some viewers, not that newcomers uniformly disliked the film.
Why did it open strongly despite the reviews?
The numbers establish that the film had a large opening while its critical score was low and its audience score was substantially higher. They do not establish that the reviews caused—or failed to cause—the turnout. The separate PostTrak recommendation result suggests many surveyed ticket buyers left enthusiastic enough to recommend it, but it does not explain their decision to buy tickets in the first place.

The sequel is based on Scott Cawthon’s game series, directed by returning filmmaker Emma Tammi and written by Cawthon. Universal’s synopsis follows Abby as she seeks out her animatronic friends and uncovers secrets about Freddy’s origins. That franchise continuity gives fans recognizable characters and lore, while the critical reception signals that the film’s execution did not persuade many reviewers. Neither point, on its own, proves what drove the box office.
