He photographed film personalities, gathered production and personnel information, worked in film publicity, and preserved photographs and printed material. His reference book and decades of collected records made him a valuable source for journalists and enthusiasts, especially before film information was readily searchable online.
Who was Film News Anandan?
Anandan was a photographer, film historian and public-relations officer in the South Indian film industry, remembered particularly for his work on Tamil cinema. The name “Film News” became part of his identity after he photographed actors for the magazine Film News in 1954. Contemporary accounts also describe him as a photojournalist and as a collector of film and personnel information for the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce.
How his photography led to film publicity work
Anandan’s career connected images, information and publicity. In 1958, he distributed publicity stills for M. G. Ramachandran’s Nadodi Mannan and was appointed the film’s public-relations officer—described in contemporary accounts as his first film PRO assignment. He later worked on films and with performers across South Indian cinema.
These roles reinforced one another: photography gave him access to film personalities and publicity materials, while his information-gathering and public-relations work kept him close to productions and the people behind them. His value to enthusiasts was practical as well as commemorative: he could help connect a film, its personnel and its images.

What did Anandan preserve?
Reports describe a collection built over decades that included publicity stills, photographs, song books and other printed film material. The Times of India reported in 2016 that the collection spanned more than 5,000 films. That is the newspaper’s description of its breadth, not an audited catalog count.
Such material matters because a film’s record is not limited to the finished picture. Publicity images and printed ephemera can preserve names, credits, visual styles and promotional history that may be difficult to recover from the film alone. Anandan’s collection brought that evidence together with the factual knowledge he gathered, making him a human reference source in a period when such information was harder to retrieve.

The New Indian Express reported that Anandan hoped to establish a permanent exhibition on Tamil cinema so the public could access his work. That was an aspiration, not confirmation that an exhibition was subsequently created; the reported material does not establish that the collection is currently open to the public.
The Tamil film history book he compiled
Anandan compiled a Tamil-film history reference book published in 2004 with assistance from the Tamil Nadu State Government, according to the available reference record. Its title is rendered in transliteration variants, including Sadhanaigal Padaitha Thamizh Thiraipada Varalaru and Tamil Thiraipada Varalaru. The Indian Express described the book as a ready reference for film information from the pre-internet era.

The book extended his collecting and information work into a reference resource: instead of relying only on Anandan’s personal knowledge, readers could consult a compiled record. Because the title appears in different transliterations, readers seeking a particular edition should confirm its catalog entry with a library or bookseller.
Why Tamil cinema enthusiasts relied on him
The familiar descriptions of Anandan as a “walking encyclopedia” or “walking library” point to a real service, but do not fully explain it. He combined several kinds of knowledge and material that are often scattered across separate sources:

Anandan died in Chennai on 21 March 2016. Contemporary reports disagree about his age at death, so an exact age or birth year should not be treated as settled. In a condolence statement reported by The Indian Express, then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said: “I am deeply grieved to learn the demise of Anandan hailed as the historian of Tamil cinema and a walking library.”
