Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is worth playing if you want horror built on oppressive atmosphere and camera-based combat—but its fights can drag. In the PS5 review published by Mashable and syndicated by Yahoo on March 10, 2026, the reviewer praised the game’s darkness, sound and lingering unease, yet found its aggravated-wraith encounters inconsistent and sometimes frustratingly long. The headline’s “So scary, I’ll never play it again” is a personal reaction, not a universal verdict.
What is Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE about?
The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura into Minakami Village, a place consumed by spirits and caught in a repeating night after a failed ritual. As the sisters explore, Mayu comes under the influence of a vengeful spirit. The review also describes optional side stories that add lore and items, along with a new ending; late choices and difficulty affect outcomes. Those story details are reported by the review, and this summary avoids the ending’s specifics. Read the Mashable review syndicated by Yahoo.
How does the camera-based combat work?
The Camera Obscura is both weapon and combat system
Rather than relying on conventional weapons, Mio uses the Camera Obscura to photograph spirits. The reviewer says the remake adds zoom and focus controls, switchable lens filters, and special abilities and shots. That gives encounters a deliberate rhythm: players must frame a threat and choose when to take a picture while managing the danger of staying close.
Fatal Frame shots reward precise timing
A correctly timed Fatal Frame shot is the combat system’s high-risk, high-reward moment. In the review’s account, it staggers a wraith, deals heavy damage and restores Willpower. The same review says Willpower can be drained by multiple actions, making its use part of the fight’s resource management rather than a cost-free bonus.

Why can fights become frustrating?
The reviewer’s main criticism is the aggravated-wraith system. In their experience, aggravated wraiths recover health, hit harder and attack more often. Because the reviewer felt the triggers for aggravation were inconsistent, some encounters became drawn-out battles in which the heightened threat could arrive without a reliably readable pattern.
This is a report of one reviewer’s experience, not evidence of a universal bug or a measured trigger rate. The issue matters most if you want combat to feel predictable: the camera mechanics can create tension, but longer encounters may test patience when the system feels inconsistent.

Does the remake create an effective horror atmosphere?
Atmosphere is the review’s strongest praise. It highlights Minakami Village’s darkness and lighting, especially the contrast between small sources of light and the spirits that emerge around them. Environmental noises and ambient sound help make exploration unsettling without relying only on sudden shocks.
The review also singles out the option to hold Mayu’s hand. It is a small interaction, but one that reinforces the sisters’ relationship amid the danger. The reviewer describes the horror as unsettling enough that they do not expect to return to the game—a subjective response that explains the headline better than any general claim about how scary the game will feel to every player.
