The scene in question is in Euphoria’s season-one pilot: Cal Jacobs, played by Eric Dane, has a sexual encounter with Jules, played by Hunter Schafer. The encounter is described in contemporary coverage as rape involving 17-year-old Jules. Dane said a prosthetic was used for the scene, and that the group decided together to use it.
What happens in the scene?
The pilot depicts Cal, an adult, in a sexual encounter with Jules, a 17-year-old character. Contemporary reporting identifies the encounter as rape, so it is more accurate to describe it as sexual violence than as consensual sex. Jules’s age is the character’s age; Schafer was 20 during the period covered by the 2019 reporting.

The scene drew attention not only because of its subject, but also because it included graphic full-frontal nudity. The distinction between character and performer matters: the fictional character is 17, while the actor playing her was an adult.
Was the visible anatomy Eric Dane’s?
No. Dane said a prosthetic was used. In comments to Entertainment Weekly reported by Just Jared, he said: “At the end of the day, because of the context, we decided that the prosthetic was the way to go, and we came to that decision as a group.”

That account answers the practical question without implying that the scene was unsimulated. Dane described the scene as “pretty intense,” and said the prosthetic decision was made collectively.
What did Dane say about filming it?
Dane described scenes of this kind as difficult to shoot. He said an advocate was available so performers could express how they felt, and that having this support helped create a safer, more comfortable environment. Refinery29 reported that an intimacy expert helped with the scene, attributing that information to Entertainment Weekly.

These details are Dane’s reported account and the coverage’s description of the production. They do not establish every protocol used on set, or provide an independent account of how the scene was filmed. Dane also said he was willing to do what was critical to the story and viewed nudity as matching the scene’s stakes.
Why did the scene become controversial?
The scene brought together sexual violence involving a minor character and graphic nudity, amid wider premiere-era criticism of Euphoria’s explicit content. In June 2019, the Parents Television Council objected to what it characterized as marketing graphic adult content to teens and preteens. HBO programming president Casey Bloys defended the show’s approach, saying, “It’s not sensational to be sensational.” That was Bloys’s defense of the series, not a neutral assessment of its content.

Zendaya also warned viewers before the premiere. As quoted by Refinery29, she wrote: “Just a reminder before tonight’s premiere, that Euphoria is for mature audiences.” Her post additionally cautioned that some scenes were graphic, hard to watch, and could be triggering.

The June 2019 accounts establish that the scene is from the pilot, that Jules is described as 17, and that Dane said a prosthetic was used after a group decision. They also report his comments about the difficulty of filming and the support of an advocate. They do not explain every later plot consequence of the encounter or establish how the series frames it in every subsequent episode, so claims beyond the pilot scene should not be inferred from these accounts.
