Where Season 5 takes Emily
After moving to Rome in Season 4, Emily opens an Agence Grateau office there and pursues a relationship with Italian fashion heir Marcello. Rome does not replace Paris: Emily continues to have a presence in both cities, while Venice appears in the season’s first-look material. Creator Darren Star described it as “a tale of two cities: Rome and Paris,” adding, “Straddling both, Emily takes love and life to the next level.”
The broader story follows Emily as she tries to balance professional ambition and her personal life, including her relationship with Marcello. In Netflix’s Season 5 trailer feature, Star called it one of his favorite seasons and said, “The relationships feel more mature this season, and I think there’s a lot for the entire ensemble to do.”

Season 5 plot and ending (spoilers)
Spoilers for the Season 5 finale: Netflix’s ending explainer says Gabriel goes to Rome in the opening episode intending to win Emily back. Seeing how happy she seems with Marcello, he decides not to interfere.
Emily and Marcello initially break up in Episode 4. She returns to Paris and focuses on work, where a work crisis brings her back into contact with Gabriel, now head chef at Antoine Lambert’s Michelin-starred restaurant. Emily helps Gabriel secure a hotel event, impressing billionaire Thomas Heatherton, who offers Gabriel a full-time private-chef job on his yacht. Gabriel leaves Paris, and the season ends with his and Emily’s paths apart again.
