Variety reported that their jokes began with compression socks and hearing aids, then turned to Garrett’s expectations after winning an Emmy. Garrett told the audience, “Don’t think that if you win tonight your life is going to change. It’s not going to change!” The line is quoted as Variety reported the stage exchange; no official transcript was identified in the sources reviewed. Variety’s report on the reunion.
What was the In Memoriam joke?
The Associated Press described the appearance as a mini-reunion and reported that Garrett wondered whether he would be included in the Emmys’ In Memoriam segment after he died. AP quoted Romano’s reply: “If it’s a slow year, no doubt.” This is the punchline as reported by AP, not a verified word-for-word transcript of the broadcast. No. The Emmy-stage appearance was a brief presentation by Romano and Garrett during the 2025 awards ceremony. CBS separately describes Everybody Loves Raymond: 30th Anniversary Reunion, hosted by series creator Phil Rosenthal and Romano, with Garrett, Patricia Heaton, Monica Horan, Madylin Sweeten and Sullivan Sweeten among the participants. CBS says the program brings cast, crew and guests together to discuss how the comedy came together and its nine-season run. CBS’s description of the 30th-anniversary reunion.
There is also separate anniversary programming: ATX TV Festival announced a 2026 conversation featuring Rosenthal, Romano and writers, and says the sitcom debuted on CBS in 1996. That event, like CBS’s special, is distinct from the onstage exchange at the 2025 Emmys.
