Spoilers for the Season 4 finale: Emily ends the season in Rome, where she is set to lead Agence Grateau’s new Italian office. The move follows the agency’s deal with Marcello’s family business, making it a professional assignment as well as a major expansion of the show’s setting. Gabriel, meanwhile, realizes how distant he and Emily have become and decides to pursue her.
What happens at the end of Emily in Paris Season 4?
The finale sends Emily from Paris to Rome to run Agence Grateau’s Italian office. The office is created after the agency secures a deal with Marcello’s family business, and Sylvie selects Emily to lead the new operation. Netflix’s Season 4 ending explainer recaps how that business development turns Emily’s connection with Marcello into a consequential career move.

The personal story remains unsettled. Gabriel recognizes that he and Emily have grown disconnected and decides to go after her. The ending therefore changes Emily’s immediate circumstances without closing the romantic question between them.
Why does the series move Emily to Rome?
Creator Darren Star described the change as a way to broaden the show’s European world, not as a decision to abandon Paris. In a post-finale interview with TheWrap, he said, “I had this idea that it would be great to expand the footprint of the show for the European country, and thought Italy was a perfect place to do it.” He also emphasized that Paris remains part of the series’ world: “Ideally, we’d spend time in Rome and Italy. But definitely we’re not leaving Paris behind.”

Star’s explanation points to a useful dramatic contrast: Emily is navigating new cultural and professional expectations in Italy while the show retains the French setting and relationships that shaped her. The story’s shift is geographic, but it also gives the established characters a new setting in which to make decisions and collide.
What did director Andrew Fleming say about filming in Rome?
The available director commentary comes from a Netflix Tudum production and location feature, not from Star’s finale interview. Andrew Fleming, identified by Netflix as an executive producer and director, discusses scouting Rome locations on a tight schedule and moving production from France to Italy. Netflix’s Season 4 filming-location guide highlights places used in the Rome scenes, including the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Hotel Eden and Piazza Mattei.
Those real locations help make Rome more than a backdrop for Emily’s weekend with Marcello and her Vespa tour of the city. The guide also notes Mindy performing an original song at Piazza Mattei. Fleming’s comments concern the production and location work; Star’s comments explain the creative choice to enlarge the show’s European footprint.

Rome changes the immediate story without erasing its Paris foundation. Emily’s new job gives the agency’s Italian expansion a character at its center, while Gabriel’s decision creates personal momentum that can cross the distance between the two cities. The finale works as a transition: it leaves Emily with a concrete responsibility in Rome and the series with room to move between settings.
That transition is now part of a completed later arc rather than an open question about whether the show will continue. Netflix announced in May 2026 that the series will end with Season 6 and recapped Season 5’s movement between Rome and Paris in its official series update. Those later developments are distinct from the Season 4 finale, which establishes the Rome assignment and Gabriel’s pursuit.
