Kaya Blanke leaves New York in the Elsbeth Season 2 finale, but the showrunner said in May 2025 that she was not leaving the series’ world: the plan was to bring her back as a guest star when schedules allowed. The finale also turns its prison setting into a tribute to Chicago’s “Cell Block Tango,” performed in the episode as the “Suspect Tango.”

Why does Kaya leave Elsbeth?

In “Ramen Holiday,” the Season 2 finale, Kaya takes a task-force assignment in Washington, D.C. The role involves training and undercover work, moving her away from the New York precinct. It is presented as a career opportunity and the next step toward the detective job she has wanted—not as a death or a severing of her connection to the show. The official episode synopsis puts Elsbeth in prison among people she helped convict while her colleagues work to get her out. After Elsbeth is freed, Kaya and Elsbeth share a farewell. Elsbeth is proud of Kaya’s progress, even as she will miss her. Their friendship remains important to the story, but their day-to-day dynamic changes when Kaya is no longer at the precinct. Carra Patterson’s finale was her last as a series regular, according to TV Insider’s May 8, 2025 coverage.

Will Kaya return?

Showrunner Jonathan Tolins said in a May 9, 2025 interview with TheWrap that Kaya was not leaving the show’s fictional world and that the intention was to have her return as a guest star when possible: “She’ll be coming back as a guest star, and we love her and the character, and we’ll have her as often as we can.” That was a stated plan, not a guarantee of a specific episode or appearance. Tolins also said the series would not simply insert another character into the exact place Kaya held in Elsbeth’s life. He described the possibility of using different uniformed officers across cases instead. In a May 2 TVLine interview, he said female friendship would continue to matter to the show even with less of Kaya on screen. (TVLine interview)

What is the ‘Chicago’ song in the finale?

The number is a tribute to “Cell Block Tango,” the song from the musical Chicago. The episode calls its version the “Suspect Tango.” The prison-murder plot gave the creative team a reason to bring back people Elsbeth had helped put behind bars and put them together in a musical sequence. Tolins told TVLine he had wanted to do the number since early in the season; turning the idea into a finished performance also required coordinating cast availability, obtaining song rights, and getting approval for rewritten lyrics. How the number was staged

Carrie Preston said choreographer Susan Misner created choreography for the cast, and that the production avoided copying Bob Fosse’s choreography. The choice makes the sequence a new staging inspired by the song and its theatrical setting, rather than a recreation of the familiar choreography. Preston also connected the number to her earlier Elsbeth dance sequence set to “Hot Honey Rag,” which Misner choreographed. (TV Insider interview)

The returning performers in the finale included Retta, Gina Gershon, Elizabeth Lail, Mary-Louise Parker, and Alyssa Milano, among others. TV Insider’s list also includes Stephen Moyer, André De Shields, and Arian Moayed. These returning faces help tie the musical number to the cases and criminals Elsbeth has encountered across the series. (TheWrap; TV Insider)

Where does the finale fit in Season 2?

“Ramen Holiday” is the Season 2 finale, scheduled by CBS for May 8, 2025. The official synopsis centers on Elsbeth’s imprisonment and her precinct colleagues’ efforts to free her; Kaya’s departure and the musical tribute sit within that finale’s larger prison storyline. CBS and Paramount+ maintain official episode guides, though current streaming availability and terms can vary by region and change over time.
