Spoilers for season 1, episode 1. In “The Hidden Hand,” young Valya Harkonnen pledges to protect the Sisterhood by helping place one of its own on the Imperial Throne. The episode’s official synopsis then jumps thirty years, when a threat puts her long-planned political project at risk.
What happens in “The Hidden Hand”?
Apple TV’s episode listing frames the story around a promise made on Wallach IX. Young Valya tells Mother Superior Raquella that she will protect the Sisterhood, with the aim of putting one of its members on the Imperial Throne. The synopsis then moves forward thirty years and says Valya faces a threat to the plan she has been waiting to carry out.
That is the episode’s central setup: a vow of loyalty becomes a project to influence the empire’s future leadership. The listing establishes the promise, the time jump, and the threat, but not the sequence of scenes or the resolution of the immediate conflict.
Why does the Sisterhood want influence over the throne?
TIME explains the political ambition behind Raquella’s proposal: she wants a secret breeding program intended to influence royal unions and cultivate rulers the Sisterhood could control. TIME also describes the plan as contested within the Sisterhood. In that context, Valya’s promise is more than a pledge to an individual leader; it commits her to a disputed strategy for shaping dynastic power.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The episode’s “hidden hand” is therefore a quiet political project, paired with an internal struggle over who should direct it. The breeding scheme is part of the series’ fictional political world, not a claim about real-world science.
Where does the episode fit in the Dune timeline?
TIME describes Dune: Prophecy as taking place about 10,000 years before Paul Atreides. It identifies the series as based on Sisterhood of Dune, the first novel in the Great Schools of Dune prequel trilogy by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The novel offers franchise background; it is not an episode companion or a guarantee of scene-for-scene adaptation.
