Q. Lyle Jennings kidnapped Merritt Lingard, and his mother, Ailsa Jennings, helped keep her captive. Lyle had killed the real Sam Haig and stolen his identity, which is why Merritt knew him as Sam. Their stated motive was revenge for the death of Ailsa’s son, Harry.
Who kidnapped Merritt Lingard?
Lyle Jennings was Merritt’s kidnapper; Ailsa Jennings was his accomplice. They held Merritt for four years in a hyperbaric chamber after her disappearance was mistaken for an apparent fall from a ferry. The case becomes one of the cold cases assigned to Carl Mørck’s newly formed Department Q in Edinburgh. Netflix’s finale explanation describes the case that brings Merritt to the unit as one in which investigators could not establish why or how someone had fallen from a ferry.
Why did Merritt know her captor as Sam?
The man Merritt knew as Sam Haig was actually Lyle Jennings. Lyle and the real Sam had known each other as boys at Godhaven. Lyle killed Sam and took his identity, allowing him to enter Merritt’s life under Sam’s name. TIME’s finale recap also identifies the two men called Sam Haig and explains the identity theft.
Why did Lyle and Ailsa hold Merritt captive?
Their stated motive was retaliation over Harry’s death. Merritt had been involved with Harry, and Ailsa and Lyle blamed her for what happened to him. That is the captors’ belief and justification; it is not the same as an impartial finding that Merritt caused Harry’s death. ELLE’s season-one finale recap also describes the revenge motive.

Why couldn’t Department Q simply open the chamber?
Merritt was confined in a hyperbaric chamber, where abruptly opening the door could cause a fatal pressure change. Department Q therefore has to manage the pressure rather than force the chamber open. Hardy guides Carl and Akram through the controls by phone while they attempt the rescue. Netflix and TIME both describe the danger and the controlled rescue; this is a plot point, not medical guidance.
What happens to Merritt, Lyle, and Ailsa?
The rescue succeeds, and Merritt survives. Lyle arrives armed and shoots Carl; Akram fights back and kills Lyle. Ailsa tries to flee and dies by suicide after police confront her. Merritt later reunites with her brother, William, but does not meet Carl: they pass each other at police headquarters. Netflix’s account of the finale describes these outcomes.

Is the whole story resolved at the end?
Merritt’s disappearance is solved, but the show leaves another investigation open. An earlier shooting killed a young officer and left Hardy paralyzed; Hardy is assigned to establish the facts. Carl returns to work with Hardy, who is on crutches. Carl also uses what he knows about Burns’ corruption to push for more Department Q funding and Akram’s advancement. The ending separates the closed kidnapping case from the unresolved shooting thread. Netflix’s finale explanation covers both.

Netflix describes Dept. Q as an adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Department Q novels. The series begins with Carl leading a new Edinburgh cold-case unit, created in part as a public-relations measure. Netflix’s series overview says Scott Frank wrote or co-wrote all nine episodes. The novel series offers a way to explore the same broader franchise, but the books are not an exact recap of the television finale.
