Daughters follows four girls as they prepare for a father-daughter dance at a Washington, D.C., jail. The dance brings a rare stretch of closeness into families shaped by incarceration, but the documentary’s focus extends beyond one night: it attends to the girls’ lives before and after the reunion, without suggesting that a dance can undo separation.
What Daughters follows
Co-directed by Natalie Rae and Angela Patton, Daughters (2024) centers on Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja’Ana, whose fathers are incarcerated. The film follows their preparation for a special father-daughter dance at a Washington, D.C., jail, as well as the family experiences surrounding that event. The filmmakers describe an eight-year documentary journey, making the dance a focal point within a longer account rather than the whole story. The official film site describes the project and its subjects.

The film’s perspective is deliberately girls-centered. Rae and Patton have said they wanted to tell the story from the girls’ point of view, as reported by the Associated Press and Sundance Institute. That choice matters: the fathers’ incarceration is not treated only as an institutional fact, but as a separation the girls live with in the course of family life.
Why the dance is powerful—and what it cannot do
A dance in a jail is an unusual chance for fathers and daughters to share physical presence and a family ritual. The event gives the film an immediate emotional center: preparation leads toward a reunion that is brief by design, set against the larger reality of incarceration and time apart.
#1 Best Overall
The dance’s significance is clearest when it is not mistaken for a solution. Contact on one occasion does not end the separation or settle the difficulties families face. The documentary’s wider scope, including life around and after the event, keeps that distinction in view. The emotional force comes from the value of the connection, not from claiming that one night repairs everything.
The program behind the event
The dance takes place in the context of a program that includes group counseling fathers are required to attend. Netflix identifies Chad Morris as the Fatherhood Responsibility Program facilitator and reports that Patton had worked with him for many years. This context helps explain that the event is organized, not simply an unscheduled visit; it does not establish that the dance itself produces lasting outcomes.
Sundance Institute reports that the film ends with a message that 95 percent of men who participated in the program had not returned to prison. That figure should be read as an attributed program claim, not proof that the dance caused reduced recidivism: the cited coverage does not give the number of men, the follow-up period, the definition of “returned,” or the measurement method.

Verdict
Daughters is a moving documentary premise built around a sharply defined event, but its subject is larger than the dance. Keeping the girls’ experiences at the center makes the reunion matter without turning it into an easy resolution. Its most important distinction is also its most humane one: a fleeting moment of togetherness can be precious even when the conditions that make it fleeting remain.
