Artem Chigvintsev had been arrested weeks earlier, but the available reporting and official casting materials do not establish that the arrest caused Sosa’s promotion. The dates show a sequence, not a proven reason.
What changed for Ezra Sosa in season 33?
ABC’s September 11, 2024 season announcement listed “Fashionista and entrepreneur Anna Delvey and pro Ezra Sosa” as a competition pair. Their first dance was scheduled as a cha-cha to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.” ABC described the show’s format as celebrities competing in choreographed routines with trained ballroom dancers. ABC’s season 33 announcement confirms Sosa’s professional pairing; it does not explain why he received the role.

A September 4 Yahoo Entertainment search-result headline described Sosa as promoted to pro after it was confirmed Chigvintsev would not return. The article page could not be accessed, so that description is limited secondary reporting rather than an independently verified account of the casting decision. Neither that report nor ABC’s announcement demonstrates that the arrest prompted the promotion. Yahoo Entertainment’s report
How the dates line up
- August 29, 2024: Artem Chigvintsev was arrested in Napa County, California, on suspicion of felony domestic violence, according to ABC News. An arrest is not proof of guilt.
- September 4, 2024: The Yahoo Entertainment search result described Sosa’s move to professional partner after Chigvintsev was confirmed not to be returning. The available record does not establish a causal link.
- September 11, 2024: ABC Publicity announced the season 33 couples, including Delvey and Sosa.
- September 17, 2024: ABC’s release scheduled the season premiere for ABC and Disney+, with next-day Hulu streaming. Those were the announced viewing options for that 2024 premiere, not a statement of current availability.
- September 24, 2024: The Napa County District Attorney’s Office decided not to file criminal charges against Chigvintsev, ABC News reported. That was a prosecutorial charging decision, not a court acquittal or finding that an allegation was false.
- September 24, 2024 episode: The Associated Press reported that Anna Sorokin, who competed as Anna Delvey, and Sosa were eliminated after performing “Suddenly I See.” The AP said eliminations had begun in the second week and were based on viewer votes. Associated Press episode report
What the no-charge decision means
ABC News reported that Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley said her office would not file charges after reviewing the investigation and evidence. Haley’s statement, as reproduced by ABC News, said prosecutors must file only when the evidence supports charges and meet the criminal standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The decision means the office declined prosecution; it should not be described as a verdict on guilt or innocence.

Is Ezra Sosa still a pro, and is Artem Chigvintsev returning?
ABC’s cast page, accessed October 4, 2026, labels Sosa a “Pro” and lists Julia Stiles as his season 35 partner. ABC’s Ezra Sosa cast page is a dated snapshot and could change. ABC’s Artem Chigvintsev page labels him a “Pro” and lists his season 32 partner, Charity Lawson, but does not establish whether he will participate in a later season.
