Spoilers for the season 1 finale of Cross. The key reveal is that the person who threatened Alex Cross’s family was not the serial killer Alex and John Sampson had been pursuing. Season 2 shifts to a new case involving a death threat against billionaire Lance Durand, while the show leaves room for more complications in Alex and John’s friendship.
What was the twist at the end of Cross season 1?
Season 1 runs two threats alongside each other. Alex Cross and his partner John Sampson investigate a prolific, sadistic serial killer, while a separate, mysterious figure from Alex’s past puts his family’s safety—and the stability he has been rebuilding after a major loss—at risk. The finale’s crucial distinction is that these are not the same person. The family threat is not the killer the detectives have been tracking through the season.
That separation matters: the finale does not simply reveal that the serial killer was behind every danger Alex faced. It resolves the season’s killer investigation while preserving the family threat as its own strand of the story. Amazon’s official season 1 recap describes the two pressures on Alex; TV Insider’s finale interview with Isaiah Mustafa, who plays John, makes the distinction explicit.
Are Alex and John still at odds?
They come through the serial-killer case, but that does not mean every problem between them is settled. In the November 14, 2024, TV Insider interview, published before season 2 aired, Mustafa said: “Well, yeah, they definitely come through the other side of the serial killer. But have they worked through everything? Maybe there’s still some stuff on the table to discuss. That’s the benefit of having a second season.”

Mustafa also teased a change in how viewers would understand the characters: “Whatever you know about those characters in the first season, be prepared to see something completely different in the second season. You will learn more.” That was a pre-release tease, not a description of specific season 2 events.
What is the official setup for season 2?
Amazon’s official premise puts Alex and FBI Agent Kayla Craig on a joint mission after billionaire business titan Lance Durand asks the FBI for protection against a death threat. They must protect Durand and find the person behind the threat, who leaves gruesome clues. Meanwhile, John makes an unexpected connection. The summary establishes the setup without requiring viewers to know the identity of the threat-maker in advance.

Is Cross based on a James Patterson book?
The series uses characters from James Patterson’s Alex Cross books, but that does not make season 1 a direct adaptation of a particular novel. Creator Ben Watkins described television as a way to expand the story and give Alex a personal journey alongside the thriller plot. In an October 31, 2024, TV Insider interview, he said: “We really wanted to just expand on what had been seen, and I personally felt like we could have a huge advantage by doing it for television because that would give us more real estate so we can make the landscape bigger. There’s a really important by-product of that: That means you don’t just get a thriller with all the twists and turns. That means you actually get to do a character story, a personal journey for Alex Cross.”

Where can you watch Cross, and will there be a season 3?
As of October 4, 2026, Amazon says seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Prime Video and the series has been renewed for season 3. Amazon has not announced a season 3 release date. Availability can vary by region; check the official series update for current information.
