When did Marlyne Barrett leave Chicago Med?
Barrett had played emergency department nurse Maggie Lockwood since Chicago Med launched in 2015. In August 2025, reports said she would step away before Season 11, which began on October 1, 2025. Calling it a departure after 10 years describes the span between the show’s launch and the announcement; it does not establish that Barrett appeared in every episode.

TVLine reported that her exit was not necessarily permanent. TheWrap reported she was stepping away for undisclosed personal reasons. Neither report announced a return date.
Why did Barrett leave?
The public explanation was personal reasons. After the Season 11 premiere, showrunner Allen MacDonald said Barrett wanted to step away and that the production respected her decision. He told Deadline, as quoted by Just Jared: “When Marlyne told us she wanted to step away, we, of course, respected that. She had to do so for personal reasons.” The reports do not disclose more, so a more specific explanation would be speculation.

Her health history is not an established reason
Barrett publicly disclosed uterine and ovarian cancer in 2022. TheWrap reported that she later told People she was in complete remission after treatment, which included 30 rounds of chemotherapy. That is health context, not evidence that her diagnosis or treatment caused her departure. Barrett’s prior cancer experience should not be presented as the reason she left the series.
Is Marlyne Barrett returning as Maggie?
Return expectations changed over time, and the earlier possibility of a comeback was never a confirmed plan.

As of that September 2026 preview, the reported plan is no Barrett appearance in Season 12, not a permanent end to Maggie’s story. It does not establish whether Barrett will return in a later season. The preview gives October 7, 2026 as the U.S. premiere date for Season 12.
How does the show account for Maggie’s absence?
MacDonald said the series would refer to Maggie’s absence rather than resolve her story while Barrett was away. In comments reproduced by Just Jared from his Deadline interview, he said the show was treating her as having “temporarily stepped away” in the short term and wanted to reserve a story for when she comes back. The later Season 12 preview says Maggie would still be referenced.
