Tonia Haddix was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for perjury and obstruction of justice tied to her false claim that chimpanzee Tonka had died. A separate chimpanzee—a mature female—was found in a cage at Haddix’s property in July 2025. That discovery violated her pretrial release conditions and led to her arrest and detention before sentencing. In January 2026, Haddix had appealed her sentence; the latest report cited here did not say whether the appeal had been decided.
Why was Tonia Haddix jailed?
The federal criminal case centered on Tonka, a chimpanzee Haddix had said was dead and cremated. In a sworn declaration, she said Tonka died on May 30, 2021. U.S. Marshals found him alive at her property in June 2022, and he was transferred to a sanctuary by June 5, according to the USDA Animal Care administrative decision.
Haddix pleaded guilty in March 2025 to perjury and obstruction of justice. On August 7, 2025, U.S. District Judge Stephen Clark sentenced her to 46 months in federal prison. The sentence was for the deception about Tonka—not simply for possessing the female chimpanzee later found on her property. St. Louis Public Radio’s sentencing report quoted Clark telling Haddix: “I hope you wake up and learn that if you violate the law, there are consequences and they are serious.”
Who was the second chimpanzee found at Haddix’s property?
On July 9, 2025, federal agents searching Haddix’s Camden County property found a mature female chimpanzee in a cage. Reporting said Haddix had possessed the animal since at least April and had not registered it as required by state law. The coverage did not identify the chimpanzee by name or establish where she was taken afterward, so the animal should not be confused with Tonka, who had been found alive in 2022. St. Louis Public Radio’s July report describes the discovery and bond hearing.

How the discovery led to Haddix’s detention
Haddix was arrested on July 19, 2025. The July report says her release conditions barred her from owning another chimpanzee and required her to report the search; at a July 24 federal court hearing, she admitted violating bond conditions and remained jailed pending sentencing. The second chimpanzee discovery affected her pretrial custody and sentencing context, while the conviction itself concerned the Tonka-related perjury and obstruction charges.
How the USDA action differs from the criminal case
The USDA administrative proceedings over Haddix’s Animal Welfare Act dealer license were separate from the federal criminal prosecution. The USDA decision records that an October 2020 consent decree required four of Haddix’s seven chimpanzees to be transferred to a sanctuary, while allowing her to retain three. It also records that six chimpanzees had been transferred by July 28, 2021, and recounts the later discovery that Tonka was alive. Those agency actions and chronology are not the same as Judge Clark’s criminal sentence.

Did Tonia Haddix appeal her sentence?
Haddix filed an appeal in August 2025. In a January 28, 2026 report, St. Louis Public Radio described her attorneys’ argument that the 46-month sentence was too harsh for an emotionally driven, nonviolent case involving a first offender, and that it treated her as if the conduct were profit-driven or dangerous. Those are the defense’s arguments, not a court finding. The report did not establish an appellate decision, so the outcome of the appeal is not stated here. Read the appeal report.
