In a November 2024 interview, the Chicago P.D. actor said she was interested in a different kind of working relationship between Burgess and Hank Voight—one built on mutual respect rather than Burgess becoming his confidant or filling a father-figure role.
What happens when Burgess makes detective?
In Season 12, Episode 6, “Pawns,” Burgess faces a field evaluation after passing the written and oral detective exams. Detective Suarez shadows her on a case, testing her readiness for the role. The official episode synopsis describes Burgess being tested as she seeks advancement.

The evaluation also makes Burgess consider how much Voight’s protection has shaped her development. Squerciati said Suarez’s criticism takes some of the joy out of Burgess’s achievement. The story therefore presents the promotion as both a professional milestone and a moment of reflection about how Burgess earned her place.
Will Burgess be Voight’s right hand after making detective?
Squerciati’s answer was not a simple yes. In her November 6, 2024 interview with Us Weekly, she said she wanted Burgess’s relationship with Voight to be different from the intense confidant or substitute-family dynamic associated with some of his former second-in-command officers.

“I would like to inhabit that role, but differently,” Squerciati said. “I don’t want to be his confidant. I don’t want to fill a hole.”
She described a possible dynamic grounded in respect and liking one another, while cautioning that “equals” was not quite the right word. That is Squerciati’s interpretation of the characters and a direction she wanted to explore—not confirmation that Burgess would formally become Voight’s right hand in later episodes.

How might the promotion affect Burgess’s authority and team relationships?
Squerciati expected Burgess to have “more power” as a detective. She also expressed confidence that Burgess and the Intelligence team could handle the change, describing Burgess as strong enough to be a “badass boss.” In her view, the promotion changes Burgess’s authority more than it changes who she is.
She did not expect Burgess’s working relationships with fiancé Adam Ruzek or the rest of the team to shift substantially. “The team is so strong, and Burgess is so strong, I don’t think anything’s gonna change,” she said. These were the actor’s expectations when she spoke in November 2024, not a guarantee of what later episodes would show.
