Does Boden die in the Season 12 finale?
No. The “goodbye” refers to Boden leaving his regular position at Firehouse 51, not to his death. Contemporaneous coverage said Boden was alive and that Walker was expected to return in a recurring capacity. The headline’s emotional phrasing should not be read as a death reveal.
What happens in “Never Say Goodbye”?
“Never Say Goodbye” is Season 12, Episode 13, and aired May 22, 2024. The preview tied Boden’s decision to the deputy commissioner race and teased a tense call. A TVLine finale recap also flagged a separate Damon revelation to Severide; that is distinct from Boden’s departure.

Why did Eamonn Walker step back?
Walker stepped away from series-regular duties after 12 seasons on the show. The contemporary reports cited here establish the change in his cast status and anticipated recurring appearances, but do not provide a fuller explanation for his decision. Producer Dick Wolf described Walker as the first actor cast on “Chicago Fire” and Boden as “the undisputed leader of Firehouse 51,” in Deadline’s report.

Boden’s exit from the regular cast marked a major change for Firehouse 51 because he had been its central leader since the show’s early years. The finale placed that change within the department’s leadership politics: the preview linked his decision to the deputy commissioner race, while the episode’s title offered an emotional farewell rather than a literal account of his fate.
