Wallace Boden leaves Firehouse 51 in the Chicago Fire Season 12 finale after pursuing and receiving a promotion to Deputy Commissioner. Showrunner Andrea Newman described it as a consequential leadership choice amid change at the firehouse—not a disappearance from the show’s story world. The reporting does not establish why actor Eamonn Walker stepped back from series-regular status.
Why does Boden leave Firehouse 51?
Boden’s character moves into the Deputy Commissioner role, taking him away from day-to-day leadership at Firehouse 51. In an interview with Parade published May 22, 2024, showrunner Andrea Newman placed the choice in the context of a contest for the senior post against Chief Robinson. She described it as a decision with consequences for the people around him, rather than a simple promotion without personal cost.

Newman told Parade: “He knows no matter what step he takes, whether it’s supporting her or going against her in some way, that there’ll be fallout from it.” The remark underscores that Boden’s move is a leadership decision shaped by relationships and the department’s changes.
Does Eamonn Walker’s character leave the show for good?
No. Leaving Firehouse 51 is not the same as leaving the fictional world of Chicago Fire. Walker returned as Deputy Commissioner Boden in Season 13, Episode 18, “Post-Mortem.” In a March 5, 2025 report, TVLine quoted Newman saying Boden was “[Boden is] still around. He’s still part of the world of Chicago Fire and always will be, in our minds.”

Why did Eamonn Walker step back from series-regular status?
The cited reporting does not give Walker’s personal reason. Forbes reported on May 22, 2024 that the reason for his change from series-regular status was unknown. It quoted Newman discussing Boden’s circumstances in the story: “Boden has been managing a lot of change at home (with his stepson James) and at 51, and learned a lot while doing it, including about himself.” That explains the character’s narrative context; it does not establish Walker’s private motivations.
