He added training to help manage the demands of long production days and adjusted his food routine. Colin’s more mature appearance was also created through costume, hair, and makeup—not Newton’s personal routine alone.
Why Newton decided to change his routine
In a June 13, 2024, interview with Men’s Health, Newton said, “When I finished Season 2, I wanted to make a change in my lifestyle regardless of what the story was going to be.” He recalled working five or six days a week for eight or nine months and said training seemed like a way to help him maintain his energy through demanding production schedules.
He also described the change as a personal shift toward adulthood. After playing younger characters, he felt ready to approach his work as an adult man. A script line describing Colin as becoming “sturdy” later gave Newton a clearer sense of the character’s physical direction. The script and his already-underway lifestyle changes came together in timing; he did not say the role alone prompted the change.
When he trained during filming
Rather than exercise before early call times, Newton trained after work. He told Men’s Health that he did not want to get up at 3 a.m. before very early pickups. As he put it, “I would wrap in the evening, get dropped off at the gym, and that became my routine for resetting after the day.” He described the gym as a way to clear his head as well as exercise.

What Newton said he ate
In a separate Men’s Health report published June 12, 2024, Newton described using meal-prep companies for meals that were higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates. He said he started the day with a banana protein shake and intermittently fasted until lunch; he also sometimes had a sweet treat. These are details of his routine at the time, not evidence that the same eating pattern is necessary, suitable, or effective for other people.
How styling helped create Colin’s Season 3 look
Newton’s preparation was only one part of the transformation audiences saw. In an April 16, 2024, TV Insider report, costume designer John Glaser described updating Colin’s wardrobe to suggest a more mature leading man. Hair and makeup designer Erika Ökvist contrasted the softer, rounder styling of earlier seasons with the changed look. Shondaland’s May 3, 2024, Season 3 featurette preview also identified costume, hair, and makeup as part of the cast’s transformations, naming Glaser, Ökvist, and showrunner Jess Brownell among the creative contributors.

What is—and isn’t—known about the physical change
The reporting describes Newton’s motivations, schedule, and some food choices, but it does not provide an attributable figure for his weight, body composition, muscle gain, or workout volume. His recollection of the length and frequency of production work describes the schedule he faced; it is not a measurement of his physical transformation. The clearest account is therefore qualitative: he trained after filming, changed aspects of his eating routine, and worked within a production that deliberately reshaped Colin’s styling.
