Brothers is worth a look for Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage’s odd-couple energy and a handful of lively comic moments, but its road-trip crime story follows well-worn routes. The result is an intermittently amusing comedy whose cast is more distinctive than its plot.
What is Brothers about?
Directed by Max Barbakow and written by Macon Blair from a story by Etan Cohen, Brothers (2024) follows reformed criminal Moke as his twin brother Jady pulls him into a cross-country trip tied to a major score. The estranged siblings’ criminal past and attempt at reconciliation give the film its crime-comedy and family-comedy strands.

Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage play the twins, with Glenn Close, Brendan Fraser, Marisa Tomei, and Taylour Paige among the supporting cast. At 1 hour 29 minutes, it is a brisk watch rather than an extended caper. Prime Video lists the film; check your local catalog for current availability.
Do Brolin and Dinklage make the comedy work?
The lead pairing is the film’s clearest asset. Their contrasting screen presence gives the brothers’ friction a comic shape, and the performances add life when the script settles into familiar territory. The humor is broad and occasionally slapstick, so individual gags will land unevenly; the film is more successful in bursts than as a steady stream of laughs.

The supporting players supply welcome jolts of energy. RogerEbert.com particularly notes Glenn Close and Brendan Fraser’s impact, though the material does not give every member of the ensemble the same opportunity to make a lasting impression.
Does the story feel fresh?
Not especially. The cross-country journey, criminal score, and sibling-reconciliation arc are recognizable comedy ingredients, and the movie seldom transforms them into a surprising structure. The Guardian found moments of amusement—including an accidentally synchronized escape gag—but judged the overall comedy familiar and disposable. That mix captures the experience: a few scenes have comic snap, while much of the connective plotting feels predictable.

Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus similarly describes a “tediously familiar comedy story structure” enlivened by interesting characters and performances. That is a useful summary of the film’s balance, not a guarantee that its humor will work for every viewer.

Choose it for the performers, the odd flashes of comic timing, and a compact runtime; lower expectations for an inventive heist plot or consistently strong jokes. If you enjoy Brolin and Dinklage playing off one another, the film offers enough energy to make its familiar setup watchable. If novelty and reliable laughs matter most, its scattered payoffs may not be enough.
